Would Someone Loan Me Checkering Tools?

Postby Snowgun on Fri Dec 02, 2011 1:07 am

I want to checker the front strap of my 1911, but I don't want to buy all the gear just for this one job.

Does anyone have the gear they would like to loan me or rent to me? Maybe I can offer a bottle of whiskey or something?

thx!

I'd almost be willing to bet money you're not going to find anyone to do this. Wood checkering is quite different than metal checkering, and the checkering is almost always machined into the front strap...and a gunsmith will CHARGE you for it unless you have an EXPENSIVE bottle of whiskey.

I'm looking for the brownells jig, and a couple appropriate files.

Fair enough. Hope you know hand checkering takes a lot of time and is easy to mess up though. I would just bring it to Ahlmans or your preferred gunsmith and pay $150 to get it done and save your time (and possibly your gun). To each their own though... :?
