WTB: Sight Pusher for Beretta PX4 Storm

Postby dleong on Wed Mar 28, 2012 7:00 pm

I am wondering if anyone in the Twin Cities area has, or has access to, a sight pusher for a full-size Beretta PX4 Storm, as I am contemplating replacing the existing fixed sights on my newly acquired PX4 with a set of adjustable sights. I have read that the factory sights on the PX4 are legendarily difficult to remove, and that a dedicated sight pusher should be used to avoid wrecking the finish.

Thanks in advance.

might want to call a local gunsmith. I looked at the same thing and a $130 tool isn't something someone really splurges on for a 1 time use install....

Yikes! I just read the description and user reviews of Beretta's sight adjustment tool at the link above, and it appears the tool cannot be used to install Beretta's adjustable rear sight. It also doesn't work on the front sight. Well that royally sucks.

I spoke with the gunsmith at Ahlman's earlier this week, and he mentioned that they've only managed to successfully remove the sights on a few of the PX4s brought in to them. He said the only way to know for certain if the sights on my particular PX4 could be removed with their universal sight pusher would be to see how much effort is required to just budge them; if it takes too much effort, they won't go any farther for fear of damaging anything.

If I had know that replacing the sights on a PX4 would be such a hassle, I probably would not have purchased the gun.

Thanks, but no thanks... I'm at a crossroad with my PX4 now, trying to decide whether to keep it or sell it. It's got less than 50 rounds through it since new.

What about you? Are you going to keep yours?

Well, I went ahead and ordered the adjustable sight last Friday, and it arrived yesterday. Guess I'll be making a trip down to Ahlman's soon to see if they can remove the factory sights without buggering up the finish on the slide.

Well, I took a chance and brought my PX4's disassembled slide (I had removed the decocker/safety levers) to J&S Custom Guns in Lakeville earlier today to have the sights installed.

Big mistake.

Although they had originally quoted a price of $30 over the phone, when I got there they took a look at the slide and said the original sights had to be cut to be removed, and that the operation would cost $40. Okay, fair enough, so I left the slide with them.

They called me just under an hour later and said the installation was done. When I got there and examined the slide, I noticed immediately that the base of the front sight was severely buggered up from their gunslaughterer... er, gunsmith hammering it into the dovetail. When I pointed this out, he brought it back to the gunsmith, who put a glob of touch-up paint on the base. Okay...

I paid for the "service", drove home and took a closer look at the slide, and noticed that the finish was marred in several areas, the most noticeable being the upper left of the rear of the slide, right next to the rear sight.

I am not a happy camper right now. The slide will probably have to go back to Beretta for refinishing.

that sucks man. wouldn't a competent gunsmith be able to refinish it though and possibly cheaper or are you at the point where you don't really trust gunsmiths anymore?

When the time comes, I'll probably bite the bullet and send the slide to a reputable outfit that specializes in refinishing guns, like CCR or Mac's Shootin' Irons.

I currently do not distrust all gunsmiths... just the hack who works at J&S.

Thanks for the link, but the the new sights are already installed on my PX4.

I doubt that sight pusher would work on guns like the PX4 that have sloping sides.
