What...I don't have a Colorado Permit?!

Postby cmj685 on Fri Sep 28, 2007 3:56 am

I ran across a discussion the other day on alternative websites for Packing.org's info on reciprocity, and looked at a couple of the suggested alternatives. I was shocked that it appears that neither a Minnesota or Utah permit (for a Minnesota resident) is going to be honored in Colorado...a major problem for me since I spend a good deal of time there every year. I would have sworn that a couple years ago one of those two permits was fine for Colorado. Have things changed? Did I miss something originally, or just recently in rechecking? Has anyone checked this out lately and gotten another reading on Colorado state law?

The Colorado legislature, fearing an influx of rabid gun toting yahoos from other States...now requires residency of the State on which you intend to carry. Minnesota was not on the reciprocity list, but Utah was. However, since most of the folks here do not live in Utah, "our" permit from Utah means diddly-squat now in Colorado. I believe this took effect July 1, 2007, or thereabouts.

1. Move to Colorado....

2. make application

If you own property or have a business in CO you might also be eligible.

Yeah, they no longer honor non-resident permits of other states, and they don't issue non-resident permits. I got my NH permit specifically because I'm going to CO to visit with family in November, then they passed this. I emailed the governor and told him not to sign it, but to my shock he ignored me.

The one mitigating factor is that open carry is legal in CO, though I understand you're in danger of prosecution for "disturbing the peace" (or whatever else they make up on the spot) in Denver and some other urban areas. This is what I need to learn more about before I go.

It's been discussed on TCC & THR.
