Oh yeah. That was one of the first things he was told. I'm not as dumb as Bender keeps telling you I am. :D

I second the suggestions put forth already...

My only addition would be to start with a .22 rifle with open sights that is a bolt action. Allow the little shooter to load one round at a time even if the gun is clip or tube fed. Once he shows proficiency and safe handling, graduate to multi round strings.

As a treat I allow the 9 year old grandson and the 8&9 year old niece and nephews shoot a string as fast as they can (while staying roughly on target). The little shooters like variety so mix it up as much as possible.

Most of all have fun! Like shooting stuff would ever NOT be fun...

one, that picture is effen nasty... thanks alot DeanC... i was catching up on some posts while eating my dinner and now will not be eating for several weeks...

two, strad, anything i or hubby have you may certainly try as well.

three, we have a nice gravel pit on my folks property we could prolly arrange a visit to if you'd like.

dad also has a variety of choices that i could prolly ask about for availability.

the young shooters are the future of our success with 2A rights. my son got his bb gun, a Daisy Red Rider, for his 6th bday.

my daughter will be getting one this year for hers.

they both have been told the 4 basic rules nearly since birth over and over and over and over and over again until they can recite them without hesitation on command. maybe not in the exact wording of the DNR preachings, but they get the gist.

anyhow, end of rant... i seem to have done it again...

You know, if you hadn't sold that Marlin 60, you'd have just about the perfect rifle for the young lad to learn on.

BTW, I know who has it now (and it's not User482). ;)

Thanks for all the info guys! For those of you that have offered the use of services or the use of equipment, I thank you. Don't be surprised if I take you up on it. I will end up buying a bolt action .22 for him. Well, to be fair, I will be buying it for me, but he can use it. The idea of starting with a pellet gun is a good one. I guess I have to buy one of those too. :)

Strad, check Ammocraft in Hopkins.

http://www.gobblerspecialties.com/

I know they have a bunch of used Savage single shot youth rifles in stock and they can be had for very little money. No offense to anyone but those are a bit better and cheaper than the cricket/chipmunk rifles.
I have a Colt Python and you don't so what do I care...

I'm really surprised no one has suggested the obvious, before any actual trigger pulling the youngster needs to learn the terminology. This can be accomplished in one evening at Alary's if you have him sit next hammAR.

We just got turned away. I brought my 11 year old to shoot my AR15 and they wouldn't let him. He's 2 months shy of 12 years old, has his firearms safety certificate, shot his last round of trap with a 12 gauge, is in 4-H shooting sports (14th out of 98) but none of that mattered. Oh well, we'll go back in a couple months. FYI, the BPR rules state:

Age Restrictions

Must be 18 to shoot at the range without a parent or guardian, must be 21 years to buy ammunition. Minimum age
with a parent or guardian is nine years. Nine to age Eleven .22 rifle only. Eleven to thirteen .22 pistol. Age thirteen to eighteen,
centerfire allowed based on stature of the child, and solely at the discretion of the range personnel. (Under 18 year olds
without a parent or guardian must have a written permission slip giving the child permission to shoot with the adult - this
applies to handguns and is Federal Law)
