Do a little browsing at architectural salvage places and you never know what you will find. I have seen everything from old vault doors to some pretty heavy old-school doors. Industrial metal doors are available for a reasonable price (relative to new).

Sometimes you can find some real odd ball items that could be adapted for to your application and disguise the fact that it is hiding an entrance. They could also be quite a conversation piece.

Using heavy moulding that is attached with velcro and that comes off in one piece could also hide the door outline.

Don't forget that you don't need a full size door either. A 40" to 50"door set 20" off the floor and disguised as a coat rack or hanging display case could give you access in a less obvious manner.

All sorts of possibilities!

That's a great idea! I just might use that someday.

A recent Family Handyman had an article on building a bookshelf to cover a closet. Pretty cool stuff. If you want to see the issue let me know. We can swap my growler at that time. ;)

(I also know my way around a framing nailer and will pitch in if you need help on a weekend that my wife isn't on call, morning sick and the kids are healthy...)

Here is something I did when adding the door to the garage and the half wall. There are no visible external hinges, latches or gaps. The trick was finding the right hinges to lift and then rotate. No one has ever noticed it until I tell them. I have posted this before.

Knew a fella who gutted out an old refrigerator and put rifle racks and a dehumidifier in it. He then installed a hasp and lock on the outside and just set it in the garage. Folks think its plugged in and locked to keep his beer cold and safe.

That's a really cool disguise, and some of those ancient refrigerators are really well built. Some ancient POS with a one-piece door like this one would be cool:

It would make an even cooler secret door to the gun room. Open the fridge to get food and the like, but shift the package of unflavored yogurt in the back a little and the whole fridge swings open to reveal a vault door.

If anybody wants one I have one similar to above taking up space in the garage

Matt's isn't quite as retro as we're looking for, so his is still up for grabs.

Strad, I like the way you think. By the way, I saw you were looking for some tools. PM me with a list. Recently put my folks in a nursing home, and my Dad had a bunch of stuff I need to get rid of.
