(no joke)
Dear Seismic:
(no joke); but no offense taken either.

My general approach to the subject:

“I am free, no matter what rules surround me. If I find them tolerable, I tolerate them; if I find them too obnoxious, I break them. I am free because I know that I alone am morally responsible for everything I do.” Robert A. Heinlein

That said, there is no one here or anyone on the internet that has ‘Need to Know’ where I happen stand on the issue at any given moment. THAT SAID the High Tea at the St. Paul Hotel was booked and I really wanted to enjoy the carolers anyway. And spend time with the Pastor and his wife. Otherwise I’d have been somewhere else.

Anyway, there’s another quote: from Will Smith in Men in Black: “Don’t start none, won’t be none.’ At Brit's the pistols were exactly where they needed to be.

At the first Gopher I attended, I showed my SIG P220 briefly during the introductions; at the second, I didn’t show any guns. The plural was operative both times, by the way.

Anyway, in summary, David Gross was my instructor, most recently and he did of course remind us how the signs work. So the kid who did it the first time. And Tim Grant did too when he showed me how to be an instructor.

Thanks for the info. It's impossible to guess who's an instructor and who's not, but with a post count of only 8, you had noob written all over you. Sorry 'bout that.

Dear Seismic: Believe thee me, being mistaken for noob is a complement! I got my first Permit to Carry from the sheriff of Madison County, AL in 1962. Seems he was having some difficulty keeping the miscreants in his care locked up in the gaol.

I was a young engineer with a family to see to. I was there helping send those guys to the moon. With my slide rule. If you check the time line, it was BEFORE Governor Wallace ‘stood in the school house door.’

Dear justaguy: How so? In 1957 I was at the University of Arkansas when Governor Faubus mobilized the National Guard to PREVENT the de-segregation of Central High School at Little Rock. My classmates who were guardsmen didn’t graduate with us. They spent a year down there (the University is at Fayetteville) GUARDING the high school and protecting the black children, having been federalized by President Eisenhower after elements of the 101st ABN had restored order and returned to Ft. Campbell. They (the paratroopers) also went to Oxford, MS in 1962 or so integrate Ole Miss. I was in Huntsville, AL still, as noted.

In case you didn’t know the south was segregated in those days. I recollect also some governor in Georgia with an axe handle and some fellow named ‘Sweet Willie Wine’ conducting a march from Memphis to Little Rock in the late 60s, 1966 or 7. Reserves, a combat engineer battalion, were sent out the maintain law and order in that episode.

This isn’t history to me. I remember it. All that said, this stuff is behind us. Everybody has their civil rights; nobody is being overtly abused by lawful means anymore. Political Correctness, on the other hand…..

What is PC? What I found on YaHoo agrees with my long time thinking. Politically Correct is the major term denoting language, ideas, policies, and behavior seen as seeking to minimize social offense in gender, racial, cultural, sexual orientation, handicap, and age-related contexts. A way that we speak in America so we don't offend whining whimps.

The politically correct movement began at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. This is considered the most liberal institution in the United States and is often viewed as a liberalist degrading of the freedom of speech. George Orwell's book "Nineteen Eighty-Four" described in detail the idea of limiting thought through language called Newspeak, which you now find on several networks as NBC, CNN, MSNBC et al. Words or actions that violate political correctness are called politically incorrect.

Bottom line is if you criticize a person who is not a WASC or WASP, watch out!

I always thought PC stood for pure crap.

I lived in Madison County in the 60's, too. Course, it was my dad with the slide rule, putting men on the Moon... I was just learning to shoot, up on Monte Sano.
