For me it depends on what I want, how quickly I want it, and the prices I get.
For things like powder and primers I'll often order it through a local store if they don't have it in stock. The main reason ends up being the hazmat fee tacked on for shipping those items. Unless I'm ordering a decent quantity the hazmat feed can offset even the best deals found online. Of course I'm normally not in a huge hurry for a new powder I want to try.
For guns, once again unless it's some kind of hurry, I'll order it through a local shop if the price is right (In other words along the line of what I would get buying it online). Often time a good deal can be found online for a gun just to find out after shipping and an FFL transfer fee you didn't get much ahead. Another reason I like to order guns in at an actual store is because I can check the gun over before paying for it. If something goes wrong the people at the store get to deal with it whereas if I paid for it online and had it shipped I get to deal with it.
