I am currently reading the "emergency war surgery" manual. This is the revised edition that is available through Amazon.com. Lots of good information describing wound cavities and what different rounds do.

When you are looking into the class be sure that they cover the topics you are interested in - specifically deep wound care / emergency wound care. Usually a typical first aid class will scratch the surface on general wound care, but not on care for a deep wound. Also, a general first aid class will cover everyday things like splinting a broken arm, burns, bites & stings, carrying a victim from a site with 1 or 2 aids and more of the like. The previous post was correct on using "Quick Clot" and similar products. It has pros & cons like everything else. Gererally speaking, you want to use it on bleed that you do not want to bleed again - ie. bloody nose. You would not want to pour it into a wound channel or tunnel as it may inhibit the track from properly healing back together (unless of course it is a life/death situation.) I always carry a full first aid kit in my car and actually it has come in handy at a few shooting events, thankfully nothing major. Let me know about the class, I might be interested.

Tampax.................................

That reminds me about the 2 guy's out hunting in the snow. 1 of them is in front, grabs his chest, and collapses in the snow. His freing panics, calls 911 and says, "please help me, I was out hunting with my freind when he grabbed his chest and collapsed, what should I do? I think he's dead!"

911 operater, "Well, first thing is to check, to make sure he's dead!"

Try a tampon, I heard those are pretty effective in stopping the bleeding of a bullet wound. This knowledge was passed on by a Iraq Vet.

Funny the timing of things.

I just joined USCCA primarily for their magazine and back issues. What should I find in the January issue? an Article by Alan Rose on First Aid to survive a Lethal Force Encounter.

The article was a good read but left me with as many questions as answers. I guess that's part of trying to learn anything from a 2 page magazine article. The article is like an overview of the ABCDE's(Airway, Breathing, Circulation, Disability, Expose) of first aid with short call-outs to specific Lethal Force Encounter details. Thisgs like Sucking chest wound, one bullet may mean multiple holes, checking for injuries, etc... While the article was interesting in that it covered the topic I've recently been thinking of, it was frustratingly brief in detail.

There were a couple good thoughts in there:

Having plan is essential. First, you must develop a sense of survival. People who believe they will survive have a much better chance of doing so. Those who believe they will die if shot or stabbed will not fare as well.

The Author's list of Must-have supplies reads a little like here. Here are some common items you might think of adding to your kit:
Gauze dressings, menstrual pads, elastic rolled bandage, masking tape (I went with duct tape but I can see where masking tape won't stick to skin ... thoughts?), tampons, aspirin, wide belt, moist towels or baby wipes kept in a reclosable plastic zipper bag

The steps you take in the moments after a significant injury can save your life or the life of a loved one. They can also minimize the extent of the damage done, giving you a quicker recovery time. Don’t let a serious injury become fatal. Be your own lifesaving hero.

The eye opening part for me was the new reliance on temporary tourniquet use and the effects of a slashing wound. I would not have thought of hand wipes and etc as essential for keeping entrails wt (Dry entrails are dead entrails according to the article).

Due to the overview style of the article and the mention of Quik Clot and Tourniquets, I'm left wanting more specific in-person instruction. I'll keep following up on this.

Here's a thought - whatever tape you got make sure that it will still stick when thoroughly cold. The kit might sit in your trunk awhile before being used. Not all brands of tape are the same in this respect. I haven't tried taping any people together, this is automotive experience talking.

So is anyone putting together a more advanced course to deal with gunshot wounds?

There is a first aid video for gunshot wounds called "Gunshot Wound First Aid" that might interest some.

Here is the link to purchase.

You can find them a few $$$ cheaper on Amazon, but twice the shipping so the above link probably has the best overall price.
