LAPD Approves The 1911

Postby rtk on Sat Feb 20, 2010 1:41 pm

From Farnam;

1911s in LA!

LAPD's new Chief, Charlie Beck, has just approved the 1911 pistol for
duty-carry by LAPD Officers!

Approved brands are Colt, Kimber, and Springfield Armory.

No word on ammunition yet, nor is there any word on which specific models
are on the Approved List.

The Academy has already put together an Orientation Course and is running
the first groups of officers through.

No guesses yet with regard to the exact percentage of officers who will
exercise this new option, although I suspect it will be a minority, at least
in the short-term.

This represents a bold move for any big-city PD!

To approve a 100 year old gun. Seems a little slow but ok.

I know this is going to go down hill fast, but.....

If you live in a major city where trouble is likely, and you are a cop. Why handicap yourself with a low capacity firearm, that is heavy? Sounds like a lose/lose situation before you even get in trouble. That is like using lever actions instead of AR's. Think smarter, not harder....(see what I did there)

RTK dont you think the handgun section would have been a better section for this post? Just trying to help, if I was modded I could just move it.

But didn't a bunch of thier officers all ready carry 1911's ?? I thought that is why kimber was selling the copies of the ones they made for them called the SIS.

But are they California approved?

The Kimber SIS is not. It's OK for the cops to use, but not you little peon subjects of the dictator.

LAPD SWAT uses the Kimber. The rank and file were not given that option until now.

LAPD SWAT carries Kimber Custom IIs with a few tweaks.

LAPD SIS is a very small group within the detective ranks, and actually runs a higher risk of gunplay than SWAT on a day-to-day basis. The SIS model was indeed built for them. They chose to talk to Kimber after trying the SWAT team's pistols. If I recall correctly, SIS pistols do not have the firing pin safety. I'm considering a SIS for my next purchase...it seems there are some good design decisions on that pistol.

ETA - the department-issue for SIS is a Glock 21, however, the Kimber is a department-allowed substitute if purchased by the SIS detective. If I remember correctly, when the guns were issued, every SIS detective bought one of each size from their own funds. I've yet to see a negative review...

I have a Kimber SIS Pro that I purchased in August - it is a damn fine pistol. I would (and do) carry it.

I like the gun but the serration's in the form of the SIS suck IMHO, everything else seems to be done right, but the serration's just seem odd. Whats wrong with nice sharp small grooves like JMB asked for.

I'll need to handle it to see for sure. That's one of my concerns, but hey, maybe it'll actually work.

They've done ok for me - I'm not sure what that'll be like in the summer when I'm sweating though...
