PM sent to HammAR, I edited my response to his post.

Had I realized this sort of comment would illicit anything other than good natured chuckles It would not have been included. I've never had someone get mad at me for telling them they had a big...... gun.

I'm going be totally honest with hammAR the line for offensive and not offensive with you can get a little blurry. If I cross that line please send me a PM. We can deal with it like the responsible adults. I don't set out at the beginning of the day to get anyone bent out of shape. Wreck someones day or piss them off. If I do so it's by accident.

For LE I would say XD45 or Glock 21 Both good shooters and reliable.
I think .45 is the way to go. Knock down power!!! There are a few guy's that want to go to 9mm because of some testing done shows the penetration of 9mm through car doors and other objects was better. Hmmm? Maybe, but I personally want to have a round that puts them down, even if I don't hit exactly where I aim.
Ok, here we go with comparison charts. Right? lol

MnMike: Why XD or Glock but not M&P?

The M&P has changeable back straps, a heavier slide for recoil management and followup sights, and it's the one I own (well, the 9mm) so of course I advocate for it to validate my own choice ;-)

I voted others because if everybody carried a Python, there would be less crime in this world. LEO's have a God-given right to be cool in exchange for the low pay, grueling hours and less than stellar appreciation by the general public.

I thought about adding a Python for you, but I was limited to only one poll, and ten choices so I had to go with the most common.

When they upgraded, they went to the .40 S&W but then saw their officers having problems qualifying with he .40, too much recoil for them to get use to. Because of this, there was a need for additional training and ammunition, which increased costs. As of late, they have gone to the .45 acp and found the qual scores to go up, some officers even shooting a 100% that had not or could not with the .40 S&W.

So I would again support a .45 acp as the cartridge, maybe in a S&W M&P.

Cobb forgive my ignorance here, but why would shooting factory 45 cause qual scores to go up? From my experience 45 acp loaded up for defense, produces more recoil than a 40, at least in equivalent platforms.

Don't know why you would be asking me for forgiveness? :hmm: But if needed, all heck, I'll forgive ya. :cheerleader2:

But, I did not make the statement that the qual scores went up, Sgt. Chase Jenkins did, he is the Rainbow City, MO. training officer.

I'm a Glock guy but would issue an M&P 45. The changeable backstraps is the biggest reason, I think you have to have that in a double stack .45. My G21SF fits me great but I don't think my wife or sister in law would think it's nearly as good.

XD-M in 9mm, 20 rounds of goodness for up to 20 bad guys.

But you have to shoot each bad guy 4 times to be effective. :P

I have the M&P 45 The trigger feels real funky to me. It has too much travel before it breaks, Almost leaving me with a feeling like, "Hmm shouldn't this gun have gone off by now?"

Coming late to the discussion.

Speaking from somewhat a level of ignorance, as I don't own a Glock, XD, 1911 or 357 magnum, (but have shot some), I voted for the M&P. I have two and find them to be very nice shooters. Changeable backstrap, ergo design with low barrel axis & heavy slide. I wavered between 40 and 357 (sig). I find the 40 to be a sweet shooter, but the 357 rates better on OSS [insert flame here] and sheet metal penetration. The 357 is a bit snappy and on second thought, probably wouldn't be good for a department with some percentage of smaller or weaker shooters.
From some time spent on the MP-Pistol board, I think the early M&P's had some issues with triggers, sears and the striker safety. Mine (2009, 2010) have decent triggers for a production gun, but could use some work. The striker safeties are mirror finished.

Here's one with a safety, which is a good requirement as well, unless you're talking about 1911s.

How do you figure? The P30 is DA or DAO where as the M&P is striker-fired.

I do believe there are better guns out there but I am going to say to outfit a department I would select the glock 22
Why, simplicity in both operation, training, and maintenance. The gun goes bang pretty much all the time. It is constructed from the ground up as a law enforcement weapon and can stand the rigours of getting beat to **** daily. There is tons of holsters out there and a boat load of accessories for them. The passive safety system is efficient and rapid to deactivated.
As cor the choice of the .40 round. They have a very consistent and good rate of put downs, why start guys on something new when what they currently use works so well for so many.
