I've started to contact some restaurants about the north breakfast. Keys appears to be out--no guns allowed. So let's see how committed we really are to the 2nd Amendment: how many are willing to trade your guns for a giant caramel roll?!? Raising the gun issue with Old Country Buffet in Blaine caused the manager to tell me I would have to talk to the owner since an off-duty cop has been coming in there with open carry and has caused many complaints to management, according to her (just one more reason not to open carry, I think). So I will try to get hold of him--problem is that he is rarely in the store. Can't seem to run down the info on the Ideal Diner in New Brighton and don't know where it is to visit. I will keep going on the other suggestions--plan to drive down to Roseville this afternoon and look at a few of the suggestions--but in the meantime, if any of you want to visit a nearby restaurant in the north and scout it out and get back to report, it would be warmly received.

I'm just curious to know why you are "raising the gun issue"? It seems simple to me. If the business is POSTED. End of consideration, move on.

If the business is not posted, consider it. If chosen, make a reservation or ask the management for special consideration for your group (just a group of friends).

I feel no obligation to inform the business of anything other than white or wheat/"How would you like that done?" type of stuff.

Not me.. My guns are worth WAY more then a giant caramel roll..

Now for the serious side.. If they don't want my guns in there, they don't want me in there either.

Joe,
I had considered the view you put forth here, and it was a strong temptation. Here was my thinking (and maybe I was wrong on this): I figured that someone might just wear a gun into breakfast with the group using open carry at some point (since it is not against the law, just dumb--oh, oh, did I say that? ). If it was an issue for the restaurant at that point then we might be ejected with an unpleasant scene. Rather than put the group through that, I felt that the lesser of the two evils was to let the management know right up front to ensure that there would never be an issue. Further, I wasn't sure we wanted to go to a place where they object to guns, even if they don't post it. What do you guys think? Should it even come up in the conversation? Let me know soon because I have another run of restaurants to visit tomorrow!

I agree with Joe but certainly see the potential for an issue. Personally, even were I an OC activist, I'd consider the crowd and conceal. I generally try to avoid outing myself, let alone an entire group who would probably feel the need to stand up for me were I hassled.

It is a difficult issue or sure. As a gun activists' site, we probably want to be careful and thoughtful about limiting people's lawful activities. As a gun activists I'd certainly rather not spook the populace either.

How do the conversations go?

The conversations go something like this:
"Hello, this is the manager."
"Oh, sure, we could handle 15 or 16 people on Saturdays. It is not that busy around here at that time on Saturday."
"Yes we do [or no we don't] have a special room we could put you in."

Then I say, "Now this is a gun club and some of the guys and woman may be wearing their guns as they are coming from or going to shooting. You wouldn't know they had guns since the guns will be concealed, but some of them might. Would that be a problem?"

There is a long pause, and then
"I better let you talk with someone else. Why don't you get a pen and paper and write this number down?"

I agree with the sentiment that the nature of our group shouldn't be a topic of discussion. Either they're posted or they aren't, and it behooves them to know the consequences of either action. If someone OCs and is asked to leave, I think our reaction should be to calmly, politely, and regretfully walk out en mass.

In response to both JoeH and Jeff Berrgquist, Although I see your points, I would disagree. Why not bring up the subject of guns right away? If they object, they know immediately one of the costs of not allowing legally carrired weapons. Kinda raises some awareness while trying to build good relationships in the community. It just doesn't sound right for a group like this to sweep the issue under the rug right out of the box.
