Couple of points. The details of the conviction and facts of the case make a significant difference in what is legal/illegal.

Federal law makes it illegal for a person with a conviction for domestic assault to possess a firearm. period.

Minnesota law distinguishes based on where the conviction occurred. If it is in Minneosta the prohibition is for pistols. Minn. Stat. 609.2242. Subd. 3 Gross Misdemeanor.

If the domestic assault is a conviction from another state the prohibitions is for all firearms. Minn. Stat. §624.713 Subd. 1(h) and Minn. Stat. §609.2242 Subd. 3 (e) Gross Misdemeanor.

A Person convicted of domestic assault if a firearm was used in any way may not possess any type of a firearm for the period of time determined by the sentencing court - Minn. Stat. §624.713 Subd. 1(i) and Minn. Stat. §609.2242 Subd. 3 (e) Gross Misdemeanor.

If the person has been convicted after August 1, 1992, of assault in the fifth degree under section 609.224 Subd. 3 and the assault victim was a family or household member as defined in section 518B.01, subdivision 2 that person is prohibited from possessing a pistol. Minn. Stat. 609.2242. Subd. 3 Gross Misdemeanor

Personally, I would not bring out a gun around someone I knew was disqualified from firearms possession. I understand he's your Dad, but you owe it to him and yourself to keep each other out of trouble. I have seen cases where people have gone to prison for this.

Talk to a lawyer, he/she can give you the best advice.

+1

If I had a friend or family member who was prohibited from firearms possession, the last place I'd take them to is a shooting range.

I can't see anything good and can think of a lot of possible bad coming from it.
I will never apologize for being an American.
