460 S&W Fireballs from High Speed Video - 10 pics

Postby mc762x54R on Thu Aug 12, 2010 7:29 pm

this was filmed at Bill's in Robbinsdale, guy was shooting a rented 460SW and I think he was using Hornady ammo...had the red polymer tipped bullets. Filmed at 300 frames per second, which is about as fast as the camera will go with indoor lighting...

So how much of that powder is going into propelling the bullet vs being burned as the barrel is uncorked?

Good question...there must be some reason they load those rounds like that, but it certainly seems like a lot of wasted powder

Awesome pics! I wonder what the .460 S&W is like out of a 20" carbine. Heck, it's practically a rifle round as it is.

That's crazy. I did read an article somewhere (I can't find it) that the .50S&W, while impressive in a lever gun, is still outclassed by the .45-70 in longer barrels, which can get you to the same place with far less pressure.

The reason that they load rounds like that is that when they built the 460, they had a specific design goal in mind: Build a 45 caliber magnum handgun cartridge (and a gun to go with it) that would push bullets FASTER THAN ANY OTHER PISTOL IN EXISTENCE. The one caveat here is that contenders with 15" barrels chambered for the 220 Swift don't count, BUT the Remington XP-100 pistol shooting the 221 Remington Fireball at 2200 FPS WOULD count. As such, they had to come up with a 45 caliber magnum cartridge that would push a .458" bullet to at least 2300 FPS. They had horrible erosion problems on the forcing cone and barrel with the initial prototypes, and finally had to resort to micropolishing the forcing cone and barrel to an absolute mirror finish, so the gases "had nothing to grab onto".
