So I go into the kitchen for another glass of wine...

A close-up of the original high-res photo clearly shows two inner points growing, so this will be at least an 8 point. All of you hunting guys may now take a cold shower, or do some push-ups, or throw a towel over it, or something...

You really can't judge a deers age by it's antler size. That deer could be 1 1/2 or 2 1/2 years old or it could be 10. Carefully studying it's teeth is about the only way and even then it can be iffy. Especially if you can't get them to hold still while your looking...

Are they like horses? You can age a horse pretty close by how much the front teeth point forward (as opposed to pointing right toward each other).

No, they only have bottom teeth. We pull a molar and send it in, they cut them and then count the rings, like a tree. There is also index cards available where you can compare the wear on the surface.

He's looking a bit thin to my eyes. Wonder if he's an oldster past his prime or a young buck who's appetite hasn't caught up to the demands of all that velvet?

We've had an 8 and a 10 point hanging around together on the trap hill out here, both in velvet, hides are very red this year.
Wild Turkey with a brood of 6 were out the back door this morning. 8-)
