You're in a pretty heavy crowd for this type of question. At least one Glock armorer has already chimed in. Heck, hammar was John Moses Browning's second grade teacher. We've all been playfully arguing about this for years :D . At the end of the day, get what you like and can afford. If you're gonna carry it, make sure it works.

To answer your question more directly (with my personal opinion), 1911 folks seem to be the type who like to understand a thing from top to bottom. They like to work on their own guns. They have special tools for "tuning" an extractor. I don't think Sig guys do that stuff to the same degree. It's like Harley guys USED to be. Yeah, that's it... the 1911 is the Harley of handguns.

in all seriousness though - i don't own any 1911's anymore - they just don't point right for me. i like my plastics that hold double the number of projectiles. just my preference.

if you want to boil down the Glock vs. 1911 debate, once you get past the aesthetic arguments and eye poking it usually drills down to reliability.

from a reliability standpoint - glocks are f-ing awesome. beat em, burn em, leave em in the mud, freeze em, throw em off a building, drag them behind a truck, they go BANG. low number of parts and simple operation.

from a reliability standpoint, 1911's are f-ing awesome. from a design and engineering standpoint they are beautiful machines that make things happen time and time again with reliability and accuracy. they can be modified a billion differnt ways and adapted to a variety of uses. there are very few machines that have earned the reputation that a 1911 has based on it's last century of performance.

IN MY OPINION and from MY experience, the difference in performance comes down to how much effort you want to expend on your gun. if the glock design was a book it would be published in the "dummies" series. it's a gun that goes bang everytime that you can field strip, clean, PM and reassemble in less than 2 minutes. 1911's require more knowledge of your weapon inside and out. if it's not mil-spec, it's going to have to be kept cleaner than any old G17. i've never met one that you could drag behind your truck and let it rip (and before someone gets snarky, justa and i drag our guns behind my truck daily on our way to the beautiful people's club so yes, it matters :D )

i think FJ540 should put his money where his mouth is and chain that baby to the back of my import and i'll tkae it on a little joy ride and see what's what. WORD (i said that last "word" extra loud just for you buddy since you're such a fan of my shippybonics  )

Wow I didn't know this was such a hot button issue. I'm not looking for what's better then what. Just looking for why 1911 have such a loyal following. Which now I am starting to understand.

I think that if you were to remedy this, your question would answer itself. :D

There are oh so many folks here that would be glad to help with this... I'm one of them.

I just may take you up on that sometime. Hopefully sooner then later.

Though I enjoy and appreciate the modern engineering marvel that is the polymer gun ( H&K > Glock :D ), when you have a 43 Oz fist full of America in your hand and it feels like a 1964 Cadillac when it recoils, you will have a hard time creating that feeling with anything else.
