Folks think the 1911 is special cus of a lot of reasons...
Might be the way it is the most natural "pointer" ya can grab... It is always looking at what you would be pointing your finger at.
Lots of folks dont like the striker fired systems foolishly paired with a trigger "safety" (used to be that a safety kept the gun from going off if the trigger was accidentally pulled... now it is just there so that you can read about a disproportionate number of glock owners having NEGLIGENT discharges)
Might be the fact that there are 1911s that have been tossing lead downrange for 100 years (or a few months short of that) and they are still going strong. Not something you will likely ever see a polymer framed pistol manufactured with cost efficiency (as in "let's keep is cheap") as the priority ever do.
And then there is the round argument... Lots of folks think the .45 round is a better defense round than a 9mm... Like trying to drop a deer... ya CAN do it with a .223, but ya dont, because something bigger is going to be better most of the time.
It probably boils down to the fact that the 1911 is an unmatched combination of simplicity, function and power in a robust, skull breaking package that has withstood the test of time on the battlefield and stuffed under the belt longer than any other of its type.
