Legal way to kill squirrels in City of Mpls Advice please :)

Postby 12smile on Sat Jan 01, 2011 1:22 pm

Ok The Saber Toothed Tree Rats (squirrels) are taking over my neighborhood in South Minneapolis. I've trapped and released w/ Hav-a-hart trap for years..one year I got 30. These pests have gnawed their way into the attic and had to be trapped and removed. They gnaw at the window frames and are relentless.

I am at the end of my rope here. I can't even feed the birds without fattening these rodents.

I'm going to resume trapping but I want to kill them humanely with a shot to the head while in the trap and then dump them into the city furnished trash bin...there's just too many of them....

Is there a legal way to shoot them in the head with a co2 or spring powered bb or pellet gun? I have a very weak bb gun but I don't think that's powerful enough even w/ multiple pops.

Is there something I can pick up at Walmart for $25 powered by co2 that will do the job....If I can find something that would be legal on a farm in Farmington and it's outlawed by local ordinance in Minneapolis, I'm ok with that....fertilizing your lawn is outlawed in Minneapolis.

Pellet or BB powered by co2 is fine, I obviously would not use something more powerful, but I guess a .22 would be ok on the Farm in Farmington.

I'm sure someone's dealt with this problem before. Thanks in Advance :)

You have no legal options. May God have mercy on your birdfeeders!

we've got rabbits and cats all over. The cats avoid the hav a heart but a "trap" isn't going to work.

I tried to electrocute them by hooking the trap into a circuit w/ a light bulb but there was absolutely no effect on the critter, none.

How about a stun gun with a long projection in the front...stun them in the trap. Take it out of the trap and use a shovel or hammer to finish the job.

They are RATS with cute tails.

Stop feeding the birds to start.

Mink farm used to run the exhaust from lawn mower engine thru a tank of water and into cages, The water was used to cool the exhaust gas so it didnt damge the fur, Dont know about squirrel or being legal.

Per city ordinance

Trap it and drown it by putting trap and all in large garbage can.

Thats what I do up on the North end of town.

My neighbor actually drowns them while in the hava heart trap.

He fills a small trash can w/ water, wires the end of the trap shut and put the trap into the water vertically for a few minutes and the beast is dead and trash can-ready.

I've actually shopped target and menards for long narrow plastic tubs to just lower the trap into water with.

but it's winter for six months...I need DEAD SQUIRRELS NOW.

I'm leaning toward a stun device with a long nose to stun the thing and then hammer it outside of the hav a heart . That way I would have a device that could be useful otherwise. I see no purpose for a pellet gun other than to kill varmints with.

havahart with a big bucket of water. drown them. its the only legal way out side of using a frog gig. aka a spear, once they are in the trap.

They have such a high pulse rate etc, that drowning only takes a few seconds, its not a long ordeal for them, and its easier on the mind to just drop them in and walk away. also, bag them, do not drop them directly into the garbage, some of the contractors are skittish about that.

Do not poison them inside, that will kill them but they have a 50 50 chance of bedding down in the attic before dying. A long PVC pipe with Decon and peanut butter in the middle will keep dogs safe, but will kill squirrels very well, but it can also attract rats, which you have plenty of in the storm sewers in the alleys, (they're shallower than the storm sewers for the streets.) Raccoons are also around most of MPLS.

Go to Fleet Farm and get a big box of rat pellets. Either mix it with the peanut butter or put it in a dish in the cage, and let nature take its course. Totally quiet, and unless you have cat or something small that wanders around the back yard, there should be no danger to anything that doesn't enter the cage.

so what do you do for a pesky wife that's invaded your reloading room during remodeling?

Ahrens, what kind of lock was it that you got?

In our neighborhood if it's a red squriiel it's a dead squirrel after live trapping. The rest to to some woods about 10 miles away. Red squirrels seem to damage houses more than the rest.

Redneck Squirrel Fry
by Justin

~ squirrel legs, amount depends on how many you have or how hungry you are.
~ 2 eggs
~ 1 tbsp ketchup
~ salt and pepper
~ 1 can beer
~ Drakes batter
~ butter

Beat the eggs in a medium bowl. Add the ketchup. Salt and pepper to taste

Add 1/2 can of beer and drink the rest. (you don’t want to waste it!) Mix well.

Put some of the Drakes batter in a shallow dish.

Melt several tablespoons of butter in a skillet over medium-low heat.

Dip the squirrel into the egg mixture and then roll in the Drakes. Repeat for thicker coating.

Add to the skillet and cook until golden brown. Turn as needed.

Serve with mashed potatoes and cream corn.

Enjoy.

Some of the "Colibri" 22 rounds are really quiet. Some are primer only, some have small amounts of powder in them. At almost contact distance, a head shot may work. When I have used these, the firing pin strike was louder than the round. Some are pistol only.

Drowning sounds like the way to go. Garbage can filled with anti-freeze and water. Throw whole trap in, close the lid, come back later. Dispose of body in wrapped in garbage, tell no one. (Don't post on internet.) Re-set trap.

Not sure if there is a "legal" way to kill them once you have trapped them. Someone would argue you should release them somewhere.

You are welcome to release them on my 25 acres. (70 miles south of the Metro.)

Call Metro animal control and ask what they do with trapped pests.
