I have no advice about killing them, but if you want a repellent, I found habañero mustard 100% effective on my hammock they'd been chewing, and much cheaper than the commercial repellent, which is also pepper based, which is where I got the idea.

Ahrens, what kind of lock was it that you got?

4 feet of 4 inch pvc pipe strapped vertically to a fence post. Cap it on the bottom. Spread peanut butter around the inside as far down as you can reach. In warmer weather, put a foot of water in the bottom. In colder weather, wait until something is in it to add the water. Black hole for tree rats.

Keep it simple and cheap. Peanut butter, live trap, garbage can full of water. Bag 'em. Trash 'em.

Trust me. I've BTDT.

Now, go get 'em soldier and don't let the tree rats win. :salute:

I get the birdseed at Menards on University / 280 in St. Paul...I bet they have rat pellets.
I have a jar of peanut butter reserved for squirrel bait.

I think the plan will be

Trap as usual
Poison in cage
Bag
Toss in Dumpster.

I think in the summer I'll go with the water treatment.

you realize that poison is going to take upwards of three days to kill them? Its warfarin, blood thinner, and it kills by destroying clotting factors.

In the cage, contact shot with a pellet gun is going to work. same as a .22 with CB's in it. The PVC pipe with the poison kills all those that do not enter the trap. It might get a kitty or two, but doubtful.

Have the same problem....But I see it as more of an opportunity to fill the freezer for SHTF.

I also use the "Have-a-Heart" trap for my tree rats. It works great.

Instead of using a air rifle to "harvest" the squirrel after he is trapped, I use a metal pole that fits in the grate of the "Have-a-Heart". One poke to the noggin and he's doing the crappie flop. A quick gut and skin and on the grill he goes or in the freezer.

Why spend good after tax $$$$ on poison and waiste a perfectly good little meal...trap the little buggers and eat them.

Good luck

I understand the damage that squirrels can do, but all this talk about disposing of rodents makes me very nervous.

Thanks for info folks...i'd rather avoid poison..I might have to go "pipe to the head"

I'm googling stun baton...I'm assuming that 30 seconds of 750,000 volts is going to make him at least a little dizzy until I can open the trap and end his crime spree.

I just use a heavily modified "bug-Zapper" concept on top of a pole with bait rather than the light,
with cheaters for the rodents (neighbours cats can't get in)..............

Call Metro animal control and ask what they do with trapped pests.[/quote]

We called them, they told us to drown trapped squirrels in a garbage can.
