Thanks Gunstop!

Postby TRW407 on Fri Feb 18, 2011 9:38 am

I apologize if this is in the wrong section of the forum!

First I need to thank the guys at the Gunstop in Glen Lake/ Minnetonka for their help this last week!

It all started 3 weeks ago; I was in their shop looking at the AR's they had and was ready to pull the trigger. I had not started my handgun purchase permit waiting period yet and did not reserve a particular gun at the Gunstop. I asked Larry about the purchase permit and that I was/am only 19. He assured me that in most cases, the police department will mark the permit as 'long guns only' as you must be 21 to purchase a handgun and have the permit to purchase a 'military style semi automatic rifle'. So I went and applied for the permit at my local PD and waited the 7 days. On the 7th day I had not heard back from the PD and decided to run over there and ask around. It turns out the person who issues the permits at my local PD did not think/know that I needed this permit to purchase a military style semi auto rifle, he figured it was just like any other long gun. Unfortunately for me, I was heading out of town on a snowmobile trip up north and really wanted to bring a new boom stick along and try it out (bad planning on my part...) After a few more trips to the PD with Statutes and regulations regarding purchasing a 'military style semi automatic rifle' and that the permit was either to be excepted or denied within 7 days of the initial application, the PD was not going to change there position saying 'you are not required to have a handgun purchase permit to buy a long gun. If the gunshop wont sell you the firearm, take your money elsewhere!' (this was on day 9). I went back to the gunstop and told them what was going on and that I was not going to be able to buy an AR and checked out some other firearms they had in stock. Larry went above and beyond and made a few phone calls to the PD and talked to the guy for a half an hour fighting for my case. Remember, I never made a deposit on any gun at his store, he was not GUARANTEED that I would buy a gun from him, but he still was going above the call of duty! On day 10 I went back to the PD and stated that they where in violation of my 2nd amendment rights and either needed to approve the permit or deny it and provide a written statement for the denial. The lady at the counter would not let me speak with the police chief, and began to question me and why I needed a 'machine gun'. We had a 'conversation' and I left some more paperwork highlighting the areas the PD was in violation of my rights. Later that day I got a call from the PD and that my permit was ready to be picked up :D

I went to the Gunstop and purchased a new Armalite AR15, they even threw in a windowed Pmag for the trouble!

After 500 rounds of lacquir coated ( :x ) steel cased Brown bear and not a single FTE or FTF I am very happy!

Thanks again to the guys down at the Gunstop for the great customer service!

Disclaimer: I understand that the PD needed to question everything about me, it is not something they see everyday and I respect there concern. However, they still needed to oblige by the state regulations. I was very polite and appreciate there service. The lady at the counter gave a little attitude that I gladly returned to her though. ;)

End rant.

I know you guys like pictures so here it is:

Congratulations on your purchase. What city gave you all the trouble?

No they don't. They don't need to question anything. You fill out the form, they run the check. There literally should be no questions asked, unless it pertains to the data on the forum, or something about your record.

If you ever have trouble in the future, stop dealing with the front counter ladies, or LTs. Go to the Chief. It's his job. I know the desk jockey tried to stop you... she can't. Try harder.

Also... there is no such thing as a "Long Guns Only" permit, and the law says 7 days. Not business days, not "unless we're really busy" days, not "if you're buying a scarry guns days..." 7 days.

Please let me know what city this was. A few phone calls need to be made.

The majority in the metro area.

This is about the 5th time I have heard this same story.

Thanks guys!

The chief was actually very nice but just did not not have a clue...

They did not even look at the application until the 7th day...

This was South Lake PD... I am not bashing them but this took a lot more effort than was needed.

Unfortunately, I've heard anecdotes of similar problems in Chaska and Shakopee - not the age related issues, but taking way longer than the 7 days to issue a permit...

Plus the Gunstop is very friendly to well behanved dogs, and Sasha manages to con Larry out of at least 3 pieces of Pupperoni on each trip. Now if I could just teach her to bargain with Larry on gun prices...

That's all the better she does?

I've got to be careful with Larry, he'll get my dog sick from pupperonies.

Truth be told even the not so well behaved doggies get treated pretty well, my dog turns into a nut if we forget her prong collar! She's gotten so many treats that she's gotten sick in the car on the way home, 2 giant pupperoni sticks, 15lb dog, not a good mix! I am fairly certain John knew my dogs name before mine and that's assuming he knows my name, he may not!

I've always been treated well at both sides at GS. Get all my reloading stuff there. Got a good (used) deal on my .44 spl Mt Bite there. They have a few other guns I'd like to have, one being a FA, but I'm not sure I want the .454
