How to shoot and sight in a rifle? - Appleseed Update

Postby Scott Notaeh on Tue Apr 05, 2011 9:49 am

My wife and I don't know how to shoot. My wife and I both came from families where no one hunted and we didn't learn to shoot. I have had a rifle for a couple months and have not shot it yet. Fearing that this procrastination would never end, I mentioned that I thought we should go to the appleseed project in Hinckley April 16 & 17 and my wife agreed. I know this is really too soon but I worry if we try for the next one that something will come up and pretty soon half the summer is gone....

Our rifle is a regular Savage Mark II bolt in 22LR. Fleet Farm put a Nikon 4X prostaff on it and boresighted it in for me. I know this rifle is far from optimal for Appleseed but it is what it is. I have a total of 4 ten round clips for it and I have ordered a USGI sling to put on it. Looked at a Marlin 795 last night at Fleet Farm and decided that will be our second training rifle and have already ordered Tech sights and USGI sling for it. I have a plan to get all of the needed stuff together.

Here is where I need some help. We need to get some practice in with our new rifles. I need someone to show us how to safely shoot our rifles and get them sighted in for 25 meters. I know we could figure it out if we had to but I am sure we would do things wrong and end up with not enough time to get any practice in and I also don't want to start any bad habits. I feel bad for having to ask for help as we tend to be self sufficient people but I feel stuck. Is there anyone who can help us out?

Edit: Changed subject from "Need Help... How to shoot and sight in a rifle?" to "How to shoot and sight in a rifle? - Appleseed Update"

Don't feel bad at all, it shows a vast amount of smarts to ask for help before you start bad habits, or injure someone; after all, it's not like you're playing with legos.

The NRA has plenty of free literature on safe shooting that you can order online. If I was up in your area I'd offer to take you to the range. There are a bunch of people from the board though that are up by you. They'll probably tag along shortly. 8-)

When are you free? Do you ever have time off during the week?
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.

I get off work at 4:30pm weekdays. This week tonight, Thursday, and Friday night are open as long as one of the sitters is free. Weekend is free. Next weeknights are free but we need to be practicing by then.

We can travel a reasonable distance. Like an hours drive or so sounds reasonable.

Sorry, but YOU and your wife are perfect candidates for exactly what the Appleseed projects are all about.

Buy a ton of ammo, load it up into the car with your lovely bride and make a weekend of it. Go spend the night at the casino and enjoy a romantic weekend of it as well.

And enjoy the experience.

Scott,

If you and your partner can make it to the 2nd Saturday North Breakfast:
a) you will meet some folks from the board,
b) I will take you both to Oakdale GC,
c) I will bring an "extra" rifle already set up for Appleseed..........
d) and you bring a bunch of munitions and plan several hours...

PM me before EOD Thursday to advise......
