*UPDATE* Need some advice on an AR purchase

Postby V Man on Tue Apr 19, 2011 6:57 am

I have an old Army buddy that is willing to sell me a Colt AR for 400 bucks, but I don't know if it is a good deal or not. I would like to pick something up and trick it out little. I am including his description of the rifle below. Please chime in and let me know what you think.

"I have an AR15A2 Sporter (it is an M16A2 with an A1 rear sight) with a 1/7 twist M16A2 Barrel that I will trade to you. It
is a genuine Colt with a couple of cosmetic issues (no Performance Issues - shoots perfect).
It has a spot about the size of a dime on the upper receiver that looks like some kind of Acid got on it and ate the finish, then just below
that on the lower receiver is a spot about the size of a quarter where the finish is bubbled up, it must have been laid on something that did
it. Whatever did it is done and it has not done anything more since 89".

I'm not sure about the cosmetic issues of which he speaks but the rifle should look something like this:

If it's an HBAR Sporter, you can learn a few things here.

Being an A2, it's not really the kind of AR to "trick out".

With the 1/7barrel twist its not going to shoot lighter bullets as well.
$400 for a Colt I cant imagine you will have a problem getting your money back and a little extra ;) if you decided you dont like it.
Also what Joe said about tricking it out.

Thank you for the replies. So this is basically an M16 A2 just like I used when I was in the military. I think I will buy it and have the cosmetic issues fixed an have some fun with it.

He is a Command Sergent Major now, so he can afford to give me a deal after all of the BS we went through together. Our unit gave him an M4 when he went to Battalion, so he is good to go.

400 won't buy that upper on the open market. Buy it now.
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.

Roger that, I have already told him that I would take it. Now the question is where to have it refinished??????

By the age, it might be a post-ban gun without a bayonet lug (if that matters to you).. either way, 400 bucks for a functional Colt can't be wrong

I may be mistaken, but wasn't the assault weapon ban enacted in the mid-90's? If that's the case, by what V Man posted, this should be pre-ban.

You can check model and serial number information here. Your description sounds like a 6551 with a different upper.
