I may be mistaken, but wasn't the assault weapon ban enacted in the mid-90's? If that's the case, by what V Man posted, this should be pre-ban.

Yep, probably if he has his dates right. A post-ban wouldn't be threaded for a flash hider either

Please post pictures when/if you pick this up.

I'd like to see what it actually ends up being.

Or even have a pinned flash hider. It would have probably been a pinned comp.
I love it when a plan comes together!

So.... is possible or not to put an adjustable stock on this or not? I see that companies like Brownelles have kits available, but will it work on this rifle?

Yes, but to use a carbine style stock, you will need a whole receiver extension assembly, including a new tube, buffer, and spring, not just a replacement carbine stock.

If you want a carbine style stock on a 20 inch, the heavier stocks are more popular for the longer rifles (Like Magpul UBR or a Vtlor Modstock with filled battery compartments).

Here it is.
It looks like the metal is corroding from the inside out. If anyone has any ideas what may be causing the corrosion or how to fix it please let me know.

Once anodizing starts to flake, it does tend to look like corrosion a little. Do you have white powdery deposits or black hairy formations on the the bare aluminum?

If you don't, it's almost certainly mechanical wear and not corrosion.

It can be cleaned up and re-anodized.

This is a close up of the affected area. It is in pretty rough shape, I think my buddy completely forgot how to maintain a rifle.

You did fine. Really fine. That mess can be fixed pretty cheaply and you'll have a studly shooter. Don't get all wiggy about tricking it out. Take your time to learn what the gun (and you) can do without the ninja stuff. Then think about all the "must have tactical tommy goodies".

Unless you are blind, that gun will probably shoot very nicely out to 200-300 yards (I'm half blind-old and fat) with iron sights. All the gadgets add weight, and unless you are planning on house-clearing, not really necessary. As-is, it will be great on Zombies 8-) .

Wow. The only time I have ever seen corrosion like that was on an outdrive in a hot marina, but that's a galvanic corrosion. This looks chemical.

That pattern of corrosion is called exfoliation, and it is different (and more serious) than pitting. Usually it means the corroded area is larger than just the hole you can see.

I'm not an expert, but I'd wager the rifle came in contact with an acid of some kind. I would get it looked at.

Do you know who can fix this kind of damage?

After doing some homework I am going to leave this one as is, so no worries about me tricking this one out. I am sure that when she is done I could at least qualify as a Marksman during a weapons qualification.
