New firearm in hand, headed to the range

Postby jnc0619 on Tue May 10, 2011 7:03 am

Yesterday was a wonderful day, despite the rain and what seemed like gale force winds here in south central Mn. I woke up early and felt like a kid on Christmas morning, it was finally the 10th day of me waiting for my PTP. I went down to the station and lo and behold, there was that wonderful little piece of paper with my name on it! I was then off to my home town dealer (http://www.ahlmans.com/) to make my first ever handgun purchase. I had been looking at various models from various companies but had kept an open mind as to which I would buy. I was looking in the $400-$500 pre tax range, which kept my options some what limited but thats life. Once at the store I began looking over their selection of both new and used, keeping in mind my preset spending limit. I had been in a few weeks prior and handled the likes of the XD-M 9, the HK USP .40, S&W MP .40 and of those the S&W felt the best in hand. This trip I also was introduced to the SR9, and I must say I liked it almost immediately! Not speaking on specs, but it felt much lighter in hand than all of the aforementioned models. The reversible 'backstrap' was a nice addition that gave it a nice fit in my hand. Trigger pull felt good to me, and I also liked the added thumb safety. My choice had been made. :D I produced my PTP, filled out the necessary papers and eagerly awaited the NICS phone call..... At this point I was not worried at all, but a little hesitant in my excitement, as I have heard stories of NICS wanting to further check on the purchaser. After a few tense minutes I was given the all clear and I was happily on my way! Had it not been for the rain and wind I would have hit the range at that very moment, but I was not in the mood to get sopping wet. After a long night of fully reading the user manual and throughly handling my new handgun, I'm ready to hit the range!

As for my experience at Ahlman's; they are my first choice when looking to buy. They are polite, kind, knowledgeable, and always helpful. No matter who helps a customer out, this is the kind of service you will undoubtedly receive. If you are ever in the area and looking to buy, a trip to their shop is well worth it.
May all your shots be straight, true and clean,

I think you will like the weapon. The SR9 is a good handgun and a good shooter. Enjoy and I hope hope this is the first of many for you!!!

Congrats on the new SR9. I owned an SR9C for a while and it was a great gun. Only thing I wasn't a fan of was the magazine disconnect. But if you do some research on the internet that can be fixed.

Yeah? John S lives near there too. Think about it.

Time for the range report, which many have been waiting for.

I went to Ahlmans with 2 XD owners ( one has an XD-M 9 and the other an Xd-9c) to both compare against my SR9 and to see what they thought of the SR9. For me the XD-9c is to small and feels awkward in hand, beyond that I do think both XD's were very nice firearms and will not give any negative comments. The XD-M had a much better feel than the XD-9c, and fit comfortably in hand. The SR9, for me, felt much better in hand and also much lighter when trying to fire deliberately. I shot 40 rounds of Federal American Eagle 115 grain FMJ and 30 rounds of Magtech 115 grain FMC. I did not have failures of any sort, trigger was still a little on the heavy side (but I like this) and the sights were near dead on for me. I also only shot 15 rounds at a time, even though the mag holds 17+1, as the mag springs were very strong. When the XD-M owner shot a mag from the SR9 he did have some issues though. First was 100% operator error, his grip form needs serious attention and the SR let him know it ;). Second issue was a FTE, which I believe was directly related to the first.

For the reading impaired I have attached a picture of my last 15 shots. First 5 were very deliberate shots at 20 yds, they were 4" low but I was trying to get a good feel for where it was sighted in at. Last 10 shots were 3-5 second delay rapid shots to gauge how well I was able to return to target.

All in all I am very happy with my decision. The SR9 meets all of my needs and then some for a first handgun.
