Ok, now we are getting somewhere.

Bens class is a good start for the basics.

First thing that needs to be done is to untrain whatever bad habits you may already have and do an assessment of the skill level currently. Then probably am discussion on where you want to be and when you want to do it.

To answer your question, there are some local competitive shooters who offer something like that.

So here is the big question...How much did you improve? Do you have any quantifiable evidence in progress from before that summer to after? (like a classification or a improvement on a standardized test?)

If not, how much did you think you improved subjectively?

What would you have done different? :)

Last July was the first time I fired anything like that in over two years. Seriously. There are a couple of others there at that too of me shooting. Man Vs Man, I came in second that day, but in all justification, this day was primarily a revolver day. I held my own though and did pretty well considering 2010 was the first time I had shot since 2008. First time under a timer since 2007.

Ask Phorvick how I did? He'd say damn good. We did a class in 2007 in an event we hosted up around Alex. I didn't want to partake in the class as John Caile was the instructor. After my first "lesson" I wasn't allowed to shoot again. I think he was upset I was a "ringer".

And yes, phorvick and I are in discussions if we want to have another class of such again. It's more defensive, but it can be related to competitive shooting. There are little drills you can do to make better times.

With practice, draws and first second shots for me were down to 1.1 to 1.3 seconds. With practice, split times were .06 to .11 or .13 between shots. I guess the mark for that, we were working with a bunch of new MP's in Fargo. I was trying to teach them a drill. They weren't following me so I demonstrated. A platoon sgt who also is a customs inspector after my demonstration wanted to know who had the Beretta 93 (full auto version of 92FS). He said it sounded like a full auto going off. Students said I had 7 rounds in the air and still firing before the first brass hit the floor. Phorvick is supposed to have a picture showing the same thing.

Compare that to 2.4 or 2.8 seconds for first time doing a draw to fire drill and .5 to .7 split times.

Do you have any examples of how one would find who does these things besides Ben? (Would someone just go asking random people at the next Oakdale or Scapsa match? ;) ) Have you an idea would ballpark costs would be for local help?

So Farmer,

What would you have done differently? Was it as efficient and effective as you would have liked?

Check your PM.

As to what would I have done differently? For the steel shoot? I don't know. I went there for the fun of it.

as to the rest of it. Eh, that's a conversation for a beer and a fire pit.

I almost forgot, you could try and get recruited to the Army Marksman Unit then you don't have to worry about ammo.

Haven't checked it out yet, they would probably have some ideas...

The purpose of this thread was just to start a hypothetical discussion of what resources were out there to try and significantly improve competition skills. Local resources would be even more interesting.

Apparently the infrastructure for action shooting training is not like other sports.

Instructional videos may be helpful. I found this set very good.

Has anyone ever read the "Fundamentals of Shooting" series by Richard D. Frantz, Copyright 1997. I have a printed copy of it and have no clue where I can find an electronic copy of it. There are drills and practices in there one can do for both rifle and pistol.

My approach to getting good at shooting is just to spend a lot of time shooting. The Mr. Is my teacher. And every one just tells me that all I gotta do to get better is keep shooting. I could pay the Mr. To give me a class, but he would just take $15 and send me to a USPSA match. Lol.

Found this in the Area 3 training section of the brian enos forums:

Apparently Area 3 sucks for instruction... :?
