Gosh sort of think that you might want to focus on the basics! Not Geez Whiz Gizmo's! None of that will save a life if you do not ensure the ABC's! Trauma care is pretty straight forward, as most trauma is BLS treatments! Well, the first job is to ensure an airway! Then breathing, and control bleeding! This does not change with GSW's! Learning first aid will cover treating penetrating wounds, which is what gunshot wounds are! ALS interventions are best left to those that know exactly what they are doing! Sorry folks you need an educational foundation! What some of you want is like skipping medical school and stepping into a OR suite!
So you are saying that a "civilian" needs no information on the basic life saving procedures that could be useful in treating a trauma such as a GSW or bad laceration?
What kind of medical background do you have? I'm just curious because you do make a point that no civilian needs to know TTJI or relieving a cardiac tamponade, but a basic foundation of BLS treatment and how you would properly stock a medical kit with items that have a valid use in those situations could be useful.
I would venture that 90% of trauma treatments are BLS but it has been proven that those interventions save lives.
I think a previous poster may have chosen "medic interventions" to describe what we would consider EMT or First Responder (hell, even Basic First Aid) level treatments.
I sense a certain amount of bashing from you towards these guys who are looking for some basic knowledge that they may or may not have.
What I am really talking about is that BLS is all ABC's but these guys may not know what to do to support it. I think a basic class might keep some people from spending their hard earned cash on items to put in a bag that they would never use. Would I have a VOK on me - Yes(I'm an EMT-P), but I wouldn't advocate the same items be carried by a civilian.
Instead of trashing the thread with rips on people who may use the wrong terminology (medic interventions) why not offer some insight into what you feel is good basic knowledge for these guys and what you see as "appropriate"
Im just trying to be helpful, the life that gets saved some day could be mine.
