Einthoven's Triangle wrote:Real life medic interventions? Perhaps Transtracheal Jet Insufflation? Surgical Cric? What needle thoracostomy? IV therapy? Gosh sort of think that you might want to focus on the basics! Not Geez Whiz Gizmo's! None of that will save a life if you do not ensure the ABC's! Trauma care is pretty straight forward, as most trauma is BLS treatments! Well, the first job is to ensure an airway! Then breathing, and control bleeding! This does not change with GSW's! Learning first aid will cover treating penetrating wounds, which is what gunshot wounds are! ALS interventions are best left to those that know exactly what they are doing! Sorry folks you need an educational foundation! What some of you want is like skipping medical school and stepping into a OR suite!

So you are saying that a "civilian" needs no information on the basic life saving procedures that could be useful in treating a trauma such as a GSW or bad laceration?

What kind of medical background do you have? I'm just curious because you do make a point that no civilian needs to know TTJI or relieving a cardiac tamponade, but a basic foundation of BLS treatment and how you would properly stock a medical kit with items that have a valid use in those situations could be useful.

I would venture that 90% of trauma treatments are BLS but it has been proven that those interventions save lives.

I think a previous poster may have chosen "medic interventions" to describe what we would consider EMT or First Responder (hell, even Basic First Aid) level treatments.

I sense a certain amount of bashing from you towards these guys who are looking for some basic knowledge that they may or may not have.

What I am really talking about is that BLS is all ABC's but these guys may not know what to do to support it. I think a basic class might keep some people from spending their hard earned cash on items to put in a bag that they would never use. Would I have a VOK on me - Yes(I'm an EMT-P), but I wouldn't advocate the same items be carried by a civilian.

Instead of trashing the thread with rips on people who may use the wrong terminology (medic interventions) why not offer some insight into what you feel is good basic knowledge for these guys and what you see as "appropriate"

Im just trying to be helpful, the life that gets saved some day could be mine. ;)

First off my focus has been to get training! Get quality training from a credible agency as previously posted. Next, off right rescue randy has no biz messing with "Medic" interventions if they can not manage BLS interventions! There is no withholding training or super secret mall ninja medic stuff from the average joe here, but rather an emphatic push towards them getting a good foundation the basics. Gunshot wounds are just part of trauma. And, the knowledge base with structured class will last a life time! When a poster states " I don't need XXX or XXX" well, that tells me that they do not have an open mind! And, by previous experience with all kinds of people that means they think and/or believe they need only "medic" stuff! Simply put BLS saves lives! That is street proven! To even suggest otherwise down right out of place!

This is a great suggestion, I wish I would have thought of it. Next time you guy's are at work and you hear you have GSW coming in give us call over our tact Motorola FRS/GMRS radio's (camo of course) and we can be on the road in seconds. I just had the red lights installed in my 04 Chevy DuraMax 2500 black truck with the performance upgrades and the on board GPS has all of the hospitals already plugged in. I can be there in 15 to 20 minutes. This will really save having down time in a class room............ 8-)

Now the disclaimer: this is of course a joke and I think first aid training is a great idea and I already have had some basic (long time ago) and would like to learn more.

Medic, thank you for taking the time to answer questions and the possibility of putting together a class. My wife even mentioned she would like to attend. You seem to have handle on what we are looking for.

I was at an outdoor range last summer and a woman nearby caught some frag. Caused a nice rip on her forearm. Goalie pulls out a medical bag that was big enough to pack a MASH unit in. I thought he was going to string up some Klieg lights and open her up right there, maybe put in a new Aortic valve while he was at it.

Seriously though, it was very cool. Just the sort of guy you want with you when you shoot.

One of our IDPA regulars is a retired ER Doc. It is somewhat comforting to have him there.

You can buy a kit but it will be a good deal more expensive then going to target and picking up all the individual stuff and a couple plastic bags to put it all in.

OXYGEN IS GOOD BLEEDING IS BAD AND DON'T PUT GOO ON BURNS

And that folks is all that you need to know.

- about 10 4"x4" Sterile Gauze bandages
- a couple rolls of Curlex or roller gauze
- misc bandaids
- neosporin
- tweezers and scissors are very handy
- a paramedic would be nice to carry but unrealistic
- Bayer Asprin
- Benadryl liquid or caplets are nice to have
- CPR Mask and know how to use it
- A couple rolls of tape
- a sharpie marker in red or black
- a pad of paper
- and an ace bandage or 2
- a BP cuff makes a nice pressure creating device for stopping bleeding (note - dont wrap around neck - the technical term for this is BAD)
- personal medication spares - like nitro - or BP Meds
- instant glucose is nice to have too....

That is a pretty basic set up

Is this for a medic bag or a date bag?

This is the medic kit. The date kit is similar. But instead of the booze you have wine and instead of the $200 its $700.

You should only carry what you know how to use.

I have a reasonably extensive kit I bring up north for deer hunting.
It turns out that what you have is less important than what you do with it.
