They called me back and said that they would check into what it would take to replace the lower receiver and refinish the upper. Stay tuned!

Depending on your goal here you are probably heading into "could have a new AR" cost range for what you are going to spend getting this Colt up to snuff... $400 original purchase price + $275 to clean up and paint the damaged parts is not a good deal in my opinion. I still think if this is to be a "beater" rifle you'd be just as well off spending $130 on a matched upper/lower and possibly a replacement LPK to match the right pin sizes. (http://www.surplusammo.com/products/*Su ... ipped.html)

You can buy a brand new Spikes 16" upper for $500 and pin it to a brand new lower for $100 (or less) + lower build kit (assume Palmetto LBK for $99) and for $700 you've got a brand new rifle of upper-mid tier quality that likely will resell for what you have in it. After fixing up the Colt you will have more than $700 into a rifle that will probably be impossible to resell.

IMHO - if you can't fix it yourself, dump the rifle for what you have into OR consider buying a it and go another direction before it turns into a money pit.

I have a new Colt now, so if they cant fix it for a reasonable price I will do it myself. I know that I can get a stripped upper and lower and do a swap and this may be the way I go, but I want to explore all of my options before making the decision. The way I see it is if I can get them to make it close to 100% for $275 and a total investment of $675 that is a good deal for a Colt.

what did Colt ever tell you? They have any method of fixing it properly besides replacing with new parts?

ETA: oops, I see you updated recently. I got all excited and jumped the gun.

Well......Colt told me to pack sand. They said that they would refinish it for 275 , but would not do anything about the damage to the upper and lower receiver. I am not a happy camper, but I guess that I should have expected this kind of reply.

I'd shoot that thing like crazy and not worry bought it. Fact I would take pride in outshooting folks with my ugly rifle. Let me know if you want to sell it.

I am just going to see what I can do to keep it from getting any worse and maybe play with some DuraCoat. As you know I have a spanking new 6920LE if I want to show off.

Ok, the Colt is on its way back. Anyone out there fix anything like this before and want to help me get her looking respectable again? I at the very least want to make sure that it doesn't get any worse.

Can you elaborate on this?

*UPDATE* Need some advice on an AR purchase

Postby V Man on Tue Dec 13, 2011 1:58 am

Colt finally sent my rifle back. They did not replace the affected parts, but they did refinish it. They told me that because of its age they didn't have OE parts to replace the upper and the lower. I am pleased that they took the time to completely refinish the rifle especially since I am not the original owner of the rifle.
