Getting an permit to purchase at 20 years old.

Postby KinzJa on Fri Aug 12, 2011 3:13 pm

As far as i understand i, age 20, need a permit to purchase military rifles, and most FTF sales require them to just cover their bases. So i applied with my local PD a week ago, got a denial because i am not able to purchase a handgun. So i went to the PD to ask them about it and the lady i talked to seemed like she did not want to deal with it, even suggesting me to go gander mountain and do it, even after i explained i wanted it mainly for FTF transactions. She said she would talk to the city attorney about it and get back to me.

I just want to make sure i am in the right about being able to obtain a permit to purchase at my age for FTF transactions and military style rifles. It just seemed weird that they denied me because i cannot buy a pistol from a store, even though the form states nothing about just being for handgun purchases.

If this is a repost, i tried searching for it, or in the wrong section please move or message me.

BTW this is the formed i submitted, assuming it is the right one: https://dps.mn.gov/divisions/bca/bca-di ... nsfer.aspx

Thanks for the help!

do a search for gun lawyer in MN.

Or else just call Marc Berris and have him get in contact with the nice lady to set her straight.

She's wrong.

You can legally do it, I did it at 20, and I bought a FNP-45 a couple days later. (non-FFL transfers for Handguns are legal before 21)

I'd print out the statute and bring it up there and/or talk to a lawyer.

My daughter had a purchase permit at 18 years old (we live in Apple Valley). The woman who did the intake at first said of course it could not be done she was not 21, and my daughter did not submit a copy of her driver's license which is NOT asked for on a purchase permit application. I insisted she turn it into the Chief as is. And my daughter got her permit to purchase.

What city are you in (just curious)...

I live in Woodbury, the lady said she would call the attorney so ill give them a call later monday or tuesday and see what they say. I tried pointing out on the sheet it states 18 for military rifles. I am also wondering if im the first that this has happened to or not in my city but ill wait till i give them a call and see what they say. Might end up just talking to the chief, we will see. Thanks for all the feedback.

Call and talk to the chief. Don't wait for a city atty, who's job is to cover the city's ass. He will have no quams with telling you no just to "be on the safe side."

I've told the story here before (feather AT-9 thread), but I was called in to the Chiefs office at Inver Grove Heights when I applied at 20 for one to purchase an assault rifle. Bottom line was I walked out with the permit which was limited to the gun I told him I wanted to buy (he wrote the restrictions on the sleeve).

I applied for my unrestricted permit in Roseville 7 days before my 21st B-day, which did cause a strange look from the clerk. I got my first FFL handgun the day I turned 21 with that permit, the salesman at Bill's South was surprised.
