Posting s/n

Gun related chat that doesn't fit in another forum

I was in the Bill's Lilydale location a few years ago and found a nice little M1 Carbine that I was interested in. I knew enough about them to know that I needed to look up some info on it when I got home to see how correct it was, so I whipped out a notebook and wrote down what types of parts it had, the finishes on them, etc. One of the employees came running (literally) across the store and yelled "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?????" I told him exactly what I was doing, and he said, "well, just don't write down the serial number!!!" Obviously, having the serial number was necessary to verify what parts the gun was supposed to have, so I wrote it down anyway. I mentioned it to Bill Penny the next time I was at the Robinsdale store, not to get the guy in trouble or anything, but to see if there was a reason for all the drama. He didn't have a clue, either.

I think the paranoia over serial numbers is just the same crap you hear about other issues from a lot of people who are into guns. The government is out to get us, and all that. Whatever.

I think you should post the serial numbers of all your firearms in this forum.
Not only will it be a public record that you own the firearms, but people can look it over and check to make sure none of your property is stolen.

So step up to the plate and post your serial numbers! You're not paranoid are ya? :rotf:

Lets say that's a valid serial number and I was the original purchaser of that gun. An ex-friend of mine borrowed (stole) the gun, moved away, and then sold it... So I report it as stolen and say it was missing from my vehicle, house, etc. Eventually the firearm ended up in your hands. Now I see my old firearm (Glock?) for sale on the forum and I have all the original paperwork, sales records and a report that says it was stolen plus your contact information.

Where does that leave you?

While that may protect you from being prosecuted, it wouldn't prevent the firearm from being confiscated, etc..

It's all internet BS. I have no problem posting serial numbers, license plates etc.
May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?

No it's not... You post a picture of your license plate and someone can find out where you live, rob your house, etc. There is a reason why you always see license plates fuzzed out on T.V.

I'm not suggesting that S/N's and license plate numbers are top secret information, but like a social security number and other information...it can be used against you.

What about your drivers license number and permit to carry reference number? Are you okay sharing those publicly too?

I don't post pictures of serial numbers. And I won't buy a gun that has had its serial number posted. Nobody needs to know what the serial numbers of my guns are except me. Its a privacy issue.

Not that it may not have been tried, but I've never heard of it and no one here has shown a documented case of this happening. The suggestion that someone would use a serial number gathered from an online auction or gun show table sounds a lot like Bloomberg's claim that private sales at gun shows is a major source of illegally obtained firearms. There is just little or no evidence of this happening in the real world. With all the gun forum experts that are out there, this probably would have been a more prominent topic by now. But, by all means, safety first.

Some people think everyone is going to take all their stuff. Paranoid. I drive all over with my plates exposed for everyone to see.

people can rob your house without checking your plate #. My car is sitting in my driveway with my plates exposed.

That's not a valid analogy. A gunowner might remove the s/n on an image of his firearm if he's paranoid about privacy, but he can't legally drive around with this license plate obscured.
