Range report, 500 S&W

Postby Rodentman on Sat Feb 11, 2012 5:00 pm

Went to BPR this AM and brought the DE .50 and a case in which I thought was the Smith 500. Imagine my shock when I got to the range, opened the bag and found my 617!! Well I fired the DE and decided to go back after lunch with The Rodentwoman to shoot the 500.

We did that. Well, she didn't fire it, but she got to see me happy which doesn't happen very often, but let's not go there....

Loads:

Pansy loads of 10.0g Trail Boss with 330g Dardas "PIA to load" .502 lead bullets
Pansy +P loads of 18.0G Eunuch with 350g SpeerJHP
Flamethrower loads of 23.0g Power Pistol with 350g Speer JHP
Decent feeling loads of 33.5g Lil' Gun with 350g Speer JHP
More decent feeling loads of 39.0g H110 with Speer 350g JHP

NOW I have a feel for the gun and know the above loads are usable, certainly not the hottest. I know I can move up the H110 and Lil Gun charges, and probably will, but the 500 is far more manageable than I thought it would be. I would rather fire any # of rounds thru the 500 than thru my J frame .38 with wood grips.

It's a lot of fun, and will get more than occassional use. I've got a pretty good stock of bullets and H110.

I'm not sure how hot Sam's loads were, when I shot his .500, but that was a hell of a fun time. If I had the money for a .500 and time to develop loads, I think it would be a blast.
It's on my list, just not very high. I need to find consecutive serial number M1 garands right now.

You still need a .50 Beowulf upper for your AR and a wheelgun in .50 Linebaugh!

Nope. 50 Beowulf's tend to go boom even worse than 10mm Gen 2 Glocks... The 500 Linebaugh is a wildcat, and there's very little reason for it now with the 500 Smith.

I haven't tried that, or the federal 765 grain slugs you can buy... :)
