When you're under 21 you just need to get handgun ammo the same way you get beer. Telling them it's for a rifle probably isn't going to be 100%.

Not that anyone on here has ever done such a thing, I mean :?

Q: Does a customer have to be a certain age to buy firearms or ammunition from a licensee?

Retail stores like Fleetfarm, Walmart and Gander make it a policy not to sell handgun ammunition to people under 21 most likely because their businesses have FFLs. If a store doesn't have an FFL they should be able to sell handgun ammunition to anyone over 18 legally from my understanding of things...which seems to coincide with the ATF FAQ.

I am new to handguns. Could someone please, plainly, explain whether or not there is a waiting period after I receive my permit to purchase? I submitted the paperwork at the Bloomington PD. When it arrives will the dealer hold my weapon after I pay for it. Again, this will be my first handgun purchase. I am just trying to understand the process. Thanks.

You will take your new PTP and go buy your firearm of choice.

You will fill out an BATFE Form 4473. You can either give your SSN with this, or you can go without giving it. (It goes quicker if you give it). I am so used to throwing that number out after spending too many years in the army, I don't care anymore it would seem who I give it to.

They will take your form 4473 and call it into the NICS (National Instant Checks System) with the FBI. Here you will get a "Proceed", "Delay" or "deny".

If you get a "proceed", they will finish up the paperwork with you and you will go home with your firearm and they will go to the bank with your money.

If you get a "delay", you get to come back in three days or sooner if they call you and say that they have received an "proceed". See above for "proceed". If after 3 days you have not received a phone call, you can go back to the dealer and it should be treated as a "proceed".

If you get a "Deny", they should hand you a little pamphlet that instructs you on what you need to do.

And by all means if you have never shot a pistol. Get a small cleaning kit, some targets and some ammo. Go home, READ THE MANUAL and clean the gun.

Then go to the range and have some fun shooting the new toy.

With a valid permit (purchase/carry) you will fill out a 4473, the instant background check will be done via phone, assuming you are ok'd you pay and leave taking your firearm with you.

Thanks for the info guys! That is exactly what I was looking for. And I will be taking the advice offered! I plan on spending every sunday afternoon at the range until I feel confident enough to carry full time. Then I will take the class. So maybe next year sometime. Thanks again!
