yeah, i had the cold shoulder from them a few times. hell, even when i got my Ruger M77 from them. it was used with a scope and i didn't haggle the price by a penny, and i still felt a little bit like i was intruding on THEIR time. whatever. i keep going in there to see what they have, and i'd probably buy from them again if they have what i need for a decent enough price, i just don't think they'll ever say "HEY, ERIK! How ya DOIN?!" like i get at the Holiday gas station around the corner from my place

I personally thought Herb was the nicest guy there though I'm not sure who Marv is. I think it's a good place to go if you're already a gun owner but really not the best place for a first time buyer. I bought my old Ithaca semi-auto there and dealt with Herb, he was really helpful and didn't seem irritated when I asked questions.

I can say I can see where the comments about "initial coldness" came from, but still it's a great shop.

Hmm, I actually thought they were generally cheaper than bigger stores, especially with used firearms. It seems like a lot of places think they're used stuff is worth more than it is but Frontiersman seems pretty fair to me.

Marv, Irv and the guys at Frontiersman are great!

Marv has held a milsurp or two behind the counter a couple days for me while I've researched them.
Also set aside a rare CZ pistol I found there to give a friend of mine from Duluth who was looking for one time to drive down and buy it.

Have also been very reasonable when I've when trading firearms.

I'd beg to differ on a trade price. I was looking at a Smith 3953, and asked what they'd go for my 3914. With cash, they offered me 125.00 for it. I can appreciate they need to make a profit, but that lowball kept me out of the store for about a year.

Unless you go to a gun show, you're likely not going to get a super awesome price on it at any shop. Try gunbroker or the local gun shows if you haven't sold it already.

I am surprised at how many favorable comments have been posted. Frontiersman has given me the worst service of any firearms seller I have ever dealt with. I went in there in my early twenties with a grand in my pocket looking for a particular gun. I arrived at the same time as another person. There were two people working, one of which offered to help the other customer. The second employee kind of glared at me and didn't offer to help me. Even after the first customer had finished, both employees just sat there and didn't help me. I know I could have asked for help, but I was offended for getting the cold shoulder from them. I considered telling them off and letting them know that they lost a sale, but I just left instead. I drove to Bill's and got the gun I wanted.

I didn't go back for 5-6 years. In that time I've probably spent about 20k on guns. Because they assumed I was just a young tire kicker, Frontiersman has gotten none of that business. I went back for the first time a few months ago, hoping they had reformed. They had not. Once again, I had to struggle to get service. When they did help me the employee was very condescending. I asked if they did form 4 transfers and the response was, "Well, we do class 3 weapons transfers. But you're gonna have to pay us up front" WTF??? Why are you talking down to a customer. Why the need to correct me. A form 4 is used to transfer "class 3 weapons". It was like the guy wanted me to feel stupid. I won't be going back there any time soon.

I get that they likely deal with lots of tire kickers, but that should be expected in any retail business. I don't get the buy something or get out attitude when I shop for clothes, electronics, or anything else. Besides, what's wrong with just being nice to people regardless of whether or not they are going to buy something. I try not to be rude to anyone. Only a**holes are mean to people unless they think they are going to get money from them. I don't like to support, or even be around, a**holes.

Rant complete.

@cigartim

I agree with you. While I haven't had awful experiences there, they were stand-offish enough that now I have spent about 2k on guns elsewhere when they are the closest shop to me. If you look like you don't want my business I won't give it to ya then.
