As far as the Tantal goes, while I'm a big fan of the polish design, the Century Arms Tantals (which is what Fleet Farm sells) have unlined chrome-moly barrels, and all the surplus is corrosive, so you've got to be mildly anal about getting those primer salts out of the gun before they start to attack you barrel. I think that buying a Saiga 5.45 and converting it yourself (not that hard of a job, just need to know how to rivet and cut metal carefully) is probably the better idea, sure, the cost is a little higher (rifle is same price, conversion parts and basic tools will run you 150 and up depending on what features you want and how "correct" to an AK-74M you want to make the Saiga), but you'll get a properly chrome lined and hammer forged barrel, and you'll have a rifle put together by Izmash and yourself, rather than Century (so even if you are a hack, you'll still probably come out ahead).

Yeah, the higher end 74 is one thing I've been debating on. I'm usually pretty anal about gun cleaning anyway, but the real deal converted saiga is probably a little nicer in a few ways. Except if I got a tantal I wouldn't feel the least bit bad about painting or duracoating it; in fact I'd be doing the world a favor by covering up the ugly.

Kel-tec PF9 and permit will be much more value able for 99% of the time.

Then save up for the fun gun AK.
