I think it is important to have a have good mating surfaces. This tool works to improve accuracy by by ensuring that the upper and barrel mate squarely.

The Brownells lapping tool works well.

Looks like that'll also work great if you have three hands, or if you have the lower in a vise.

I was actually planning to make one of these. I read an article somewhere about lapping that face true to the bolt bore.

To what purpose? What would that tool accomplish for someone who has bought a high-quality factory rifle, or is using a high-quality upper, barrel and bolt?

It ensures everything is square and you have a good mating surface. It makes sure the barrel is true, it helps to make sure everything seats properly. The best set of words probably is that it brings it up to a known quality. Most AR manufactures don't bother with something like this for mil-spec quality. High quality bolt rifles ensure these surfaces are square. If you buy something like a Les Bauer or other custom rifle it is done. It takes more variables out of the equation for accuracy and helps the whole system be the best it can be. Since bolts lock up into the barrel, if it is perfectly square the lockup should be slightly better, the resistance of the moving opposing parts should be more even and wear will be more even.
