Permit to Purchase Fee?

So I'm doing some research online and come to find out in my city there's a charge for the permit to purchase a handgun. What's up with that? Is that even legal, most other cities I can find don't charge a fee at all. Is this one of those keep your head low and pay the fee kind of things? It just doesn't seem right.

In Mn it is a no charge permit issued by the local Police dept.........if no police dept then by the county sheriff.

What city are you in? Are you sure they are not confusing it with a carry permit

Subd. 3. Forms. Chiefs of police and sheriffs shall make transferee permit application forms
available throughout the community. There shall be no charge for forms, reports, investigations,
notifications, waivers or any other act performed or materials provided by a government employee
or agency in connection with application for or issuance of a transferee permit.

Subd. 5. Granting of permits. The chief of police or sheriff shall issue a transferee permit
or deny the application within seven days of application for the permit. The chief of police or
sheriff shall provide an applicant with written notification of a denial and the specific reason for
the denial. The permits and their renewal shall be granted free of charge.

I'd say just print that link out and take it with you when you go in to apply and ask them to reconcile their charges with what the law says - politely. If they persist in charging you the fee, ask for the explanation in writing. If they won't give that to you, have them print out a receipt that clearly says the fee is for a Minnesota Permit to Purchase a Pistol when you pay the fee (pay by check and write "permit to purchase" in the memo line) so you have something to send to the Attorney General.

I know, it's a tenuous situation. You want the permit and you don't want to piss off the high and mighty dispenser of permits. You can actually obtain a pistol from a dealer without the permit if you are nervous about pressing your luck. Read the whole statute. It explains how to make a purchase without the permit.

Best bet, get the permit to carry, and let the petty city bureaucrats go flour their nuts.

Many permit instructors have firearms available so that you need not purchase prior to class. I have loaners available for my class (Sun the 4th) if you have an interest.

Thanks for your ideas. The city of Fridley Website lists a $10 fee for the permit to purchase. Also, it can only be obtained through the Anoka County Sheriff's office. I'll bring a copy of the law as you guys suggested but it may be just another tax to add to the bill.

Are you talking about this fee schedule? That lists $10 for a permit to carry, not the permit to purchase.

They are correct in that a permit to carry is obtained through the county sheriff's office. I'm not sure what they are charging a $10 non-refundable fee for. Maybe they take your $10 and application, then tell you that you came to the wrong place and keep your money.

At the top of that schedule, it says, "What does it cost to obtain copies of Fridley police data?" I'm guessing it's a $10 fee to obtain a copy of some report that lists carry permit data. Or maybe I have no idea what I'm talking about.

It looks very much like they only halfway updated their web site in 2003. Police departments used to issue the one-year carry permits for ten dollars.

They changed the site to point to the sheriff, but forgot to remove the $10 of the permit they no longer issue.

A polite reminder would get that fixed. I'll do it, if you'd rather not.
