...That is something most of us here can only dream about having. Naming the range could be a bigger deal than you might think. If you were to find a name you really liked you might even be inclined to make a sign for it. I would let the contest run a little longer to get these old, dusty minds thinking and give us a better shot at that awesome prize.
To help those of us that don't know you, maybe you could tell us a little bit about the range and yourself. Is the range for long distance shooting or 25 yds or less? Will it be used primarily for a certain type of shooting? Do you like clever, witty, or even funny names or are you more serious and to the point? Do you have a nickname that could be utilized in the name of the range?
Yep, the thought was to drive some tall poles, and hang a sign between someday. For no other reason than for grins, this place is invite only so its not like I'm advertising for customers or anything. Or, since the monument company / gun shop in town are pretty good friends of mine, might do a large boulder or something too.
The range sort of works for everything you mentioned. As you can see in the pictures, I've got some places at 10 and 20 yards on white rock for pistol shooting. I haven't got a picture, but there is a concrete slab meant for prone shooting (hopefully with a shooting mat) at 100 yards. Total its about 120 yards from corner to corner of my back yard. We're surrounded on 3 sides by a field, and a gravel road on the north side. 5 or 6 miles from the nearest town. The range is about as basic as you can get right now, but I have plans for a shade/windbreak structure on the 100 yard line, and will be building shooting table(s) as time allows this year or next. So with the exception of long range stuff (for that we drive to one of our fields and set up temporarily), I guess you can do a wide range of shooting here. Maybe I should name the range after my dog Tango.
I reload a fair amount, .45 for our pistols, 9mm for a recent Kahr, 5.56 and .223 (ah who am I kidding, thats the same thing for me), and 44 magnum/special for a lever gun. .22's get used a bit, but it is more fun to shoot walnuts off our trees with those. Here are a few photos, in various stages of improvements being made. The berm is a little taller now (the one photo makes it look really short, probably because I snapped the shot from up high on a tractor), and I don't have a shot of my little slab at 100 yards. It is nothing fancy.
