What about if I draw on a guy who is coming at me in a dark alley with malice in his heart, and I "accidentally" pull the trigger a moment before I make the decision to, and in that instant I might realize he's got a cell phone in his hand instead of the gun or knife I thought he had?
I agree that an ND is defined as ANY time the gun goes off when it wasn't expressly intended. I also agree that some NDs are worse than others. There's room for both opinions, and one doesn't negate the other.
Speaking of Cooper, once when I was taking a class at Gunsite, the rangemaster was demonstrating a clearing technique using orange practice ammo. He dropped the magazine with the fake ammo, but accidentally put a magazine of real ammo in. Racked the slide, and pulled the trigger. Bang. By any definition, it was an ND. Luckily, because he followed all the other safety rules, and had his gun pointed at the backstop, there was no harm. He even hit the steel he was aiming at, and only just barely looked surprised. He clearly didn't intend to do it, though, because neither he nor anyone in the class had put their ears on. So, yeah, ALWAYS follow the rules. Always. No matter who you are or what the situation is.
