It's a fully blown muscle car for gun guys. Practicality has nothing to do with it. Hit the gas peddle and pee yourself, pull up to the gas pump and hate yourself.

When they first came out, there were a bunch of nice lightly used ones, as a lot of guys who thought they could handle one found out otherwise. It's the same story with the Smith 500. If you find a used one, it may have only had one box of those ultra nasty 440 grain factory loads through it before the owner said "no mas, no mas".

on that note, i have a friend witha 4" 500 that i've shot a few times. the last time he snuck a 500gr round with the 350gr ammo. that bastard. i damn near dropped his gun! WOW, that's all i can say

Its kinda of like......why did I need a VZ-61 Scorpion. Its underpowered (.32 ACP) and too big to conceal. But its a real hoot to shoot and has people coming over to look.

Thank you to everyone for their thoughts. I found everyone's opinions very interesting and I guess I see three prevailing opinions: (1) they are good for hunting or protecting yourself from bears, (2) they are simply fun (I liked the sports car analogy that someone used), and (3) there is no good reason to own one (besides 1 & 2, of course).

This more or less confirmed my thoughts on the weapon, but I was surrprised by the number of enthusiasts for the weapon. I'm also curious about how those things are outfitted for hunting...I don't imagine you even need to hit the bear since the noise from firing it would like scare it away.

I'm also going to have to read a bit more on the reasoning behind the Israeli military's outfitting members with the weapon. It seems like overkill; however, I do recall someone mentioning that they are used at border crossings for their maximum stopping power. I'm still not sure why a high-powered rifle wouldn't be a better choice.

Thanks again...great discussion.

close quarters + dude with an AK behind a barrier (car door etc) + DE50 = problem solved. same reason that 450 bush and the beowulf uppers are popping up at more and more checkpoints. heavy short thumpers that cut through problems like a blowtorch through butter.

awesome....

I take your point, but I'd rather be the guy with the AK.

I think I'd prefer steel. There are youtube videos of folks shooting through concrete with an AR-15. Of course, not all concrete is created equally...
