I was thinking I might wanna trade my rifle in but don't know how to go about doing it. What's the etiquette? What can I expect?

.. probably 40-60% of it's current market price if you walk in cold to any-old gun shop. Depends a lot on the brand, make and condition of the rifle in question and if it includes all of the original box accessories, etc...

What are you looking to sell?

Case the gun up, walk into the shop, and ask what they'll give you for it in trade for ??
Prepare to be amazed by the low price.
You'll get a lot more $$ by selling it on the trader, here, and then going to buy whatever it is you want.

well, I bought my rifle two years ago and haven't used it yet. I really want a lever gun so I figured I could do a swap.

for what it's worth, I was given a free gun safe and now have my rifle at home, so guns in the house are no longer an issue

Carl, you can just walk in to a gun store and show them the (cased) rifle. I always tell people to sell their guns to Ahlman's in Morristown, because I've been happy with what they're willing to pay.

In my brain, these are the numbers I usually go into a deal expecting...

private sale (%70-%100 of blue book) > gun shop trade (%50-70) > sporting goods store trade (%50-%60) > gun shop sale (%40-%60) > sporting goods store sale (%50)

I find gun store trade values vary pretty wildly, many just figure what they'd buy it for and don't provide any consideration in buy price toward a trade... others are more willing to wheel and deal particularly if they've been sitting on something for a while and your trade is likely to turn around quickly. Often high dollar/rare niche guns that you may think are worth a ton are a lot less attractive to a shop that may have to sit on them for a while to flip and will do better in a private sale (or to a shop that specialized in that sort of firearm).

Smith and Wesson or Colt revolvers, name brand 1911's, American military pattern rifles (AR15, m1A / m1 Garand / 1903 Springfield) seem to be the guns in hot demand these days along with the Glock/HK/Springfield/S&W poly framed pistols. Lever guns get more popular in the fall as do scoped hunting rifles.

I'm specifically interested in a Winchester 94 30-30, however, i'm very picky about quality. I'd prefer something that's like-new....even better if it comes with the box (i'm excluding pre 64's cuz they're out of my price range). I'd like an early Win 94 AE before they put the crossbolt safety in, but i'm open to the other post 64 models, especially if it's an XTR. A lot of the Win 94's on gunbroker are overpriced, so I figure if my gun is worth between $400-500 then I would consider an even trade for a Win 94 (I have an unfired Browning A-Bolt .270 win circa 1990).
