Shipping gun from Las Vegas

Postby mrp on Tue Jun 26, 2012 10:03 am

I'm heading out west camping for several weeks (by car) and will be flying back from California. My cursory reading of the gun laws leads me to believe I can't transport a pistol into California nor the California city I'm flying out of. Even if I could, I won't be checking any baggage and would prefer not to out myself as a crazy gun nut to the folks I have to deal with out there.

I'll be passing through Las Vegas right before I go to California, and am considering shipping it back from there. Again, my cursory reading says that I could ship it to myself without breaking any laws, but that it's impossible since all of the shipping companies (FedEx, UPS) require that I ship to an FFL.

So, my questions:

1. Have I got the basics correct?
2. Anyone know of an inexpensive FFL close to Northfield?
3. Anything else I should consider?

You can ship it to yourself using UPS, but you you'll have to find a UPS Customer Center in Vegas - not a "UPS Store". There is one just south of the airport

What type of pistol are you bringing? I've been into and through CA many times by air with my xD45c without any hassles. Just have to know you can't carry it, nor possess any mags over 10rds. I simply carried it in a locked case, unloaded and disassembled. Check it in at the airline counter.

Here's a good summary - particularly pages 28 & 29: http://oag.ca.gov/sites/all/files/pdfs/firearms/forms/Cfl2007.pdf?

• The transportation or carrying of any pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being
concealed upon the person by any citizen of the United States over the age of 18 years
who resides or is temporarily within this state, and is not within the excepted classes
prescribed by Penal Code Sections 12021 or 12021.1 or Welfare and Institutions Code sections
8100 or 8103, provided that the following applies:
- the firearm is within a motor vehicle and it is locked in the vehicle's trunk or in a locked container
in the vehicle other than the utility or glove compartment, and;
- when the firearm is carried by the person to or from any motor vehicle for any lawful purpose, the
firearm must be contained in a locked container while being physically carried. (Penal Code §
12026.1.)
Nothing to see here. Continue swimming.

Thanks guys!

After further review, and re-reading for comprehension some of the stuff I skimmed earlier, I'm going to keep it with me and check a bag rather than shipping it. I could not have used FedEx, and UPS would cost $75.

For future reference, here's what I learned:

http://www.atf.gov/firearms/faq/unlicensed-persons.html#shipping-firearms-additional
Q: May a nonlicensee ship a firearm by common or contract carrier?

A nonlicensee may ship a firearm by a common or contract carrier to a resident of his or her own State or to a licensee in any State. A common or contract carrier must be used to ship a handgun. In addition, Federal law requires that the carrier be notified that the shipment contains a firearm and prohibits common or contract carriers from requiring or causing any label to be placed on any package indicating that it contains a firearm.

[18 U.S.C. 922(a)(2)(A), 922(a) (3), 922(a)(5) and 922(e), 27 CFR 478.31 and 478.30]

Q: May a nonlicensee ship firearms interstate for his or her use in hunting or other lawful activity?

Yes. A person may ship a firearm to himself or herself in care of another person in the State where he or she intends to hunt or engage in any other lawful activity. The package should be addressed to the owner. Persons other than the owner should not open the package and take possession of the firearm.

Wow. I just shipped a pistol across the country through UPS and it only cost about $40 with insurance.
If you are reading this, there is a better than average chance that you are a d-bag.

They require Next Day Air, and the cheapest option was $70 according to their website. (UPS Next Day Air Saver) That didn't include insurance.

Yep, same here. I shipped it next day air saver, with some accessories and the pistol, and $1000 insurance for $41 and change.
