In reply to XDm45,

I never recommend to any of my students taking measures like carrying an empty chamber. If there is a safety concern buy a solid, safe rig. You should already have a gun that is safe and functional, if carrying a condition 1 glock worries you then carry a weapon with an external safety in condition 1.

Carrying a firearm without a round in the chamber can be a detriment to your safety, and after you are stabbed to death, that attacker will then have a gun to go complete attacks with in the future.

Also sometimes I reference weapons conditions (USMC/There are 4 in ALL) as applied to handguns:

Condition 1 (or RED): Magazine inserted, round in chamber, slide forward, weapon on safe
Condition 2: Does not apply to most of our weapon systems
Condition 3 (or YELLOW): Magazine inserted, no round in chamber, slide forward, weapon on safe
Condition 4 (or GREEN): No Magazine inserted, no round in chamber, slide forward, weapon on safe
TOYS--> NAA .22LR (5-Shot), Walther P22Q, Walther PK380, Springfield XDm-9, S&W M&P .22, Glock 23, Glock 22 Gen4, FNH FiveseveN
FNH FNP-45 Tactical, FNH FNX-9, Sig Sauer 1911 C3 Plus, DPMS A-15, Noveske N-4, Nodak AK-74, Izmash Saiga-12

I agree.

However, and this is why I thought "Yellow" / Condition 3 - What about constantly cycling the same round in and out? I've heard that's not so good on a .45ACP round to do that to it. Correct?

I would shoot target rounds for target, hollowpoints for defense, and with the same weapon. If I had a carry-only gun, or duplicate guns, different story. leave it as is then except to clean it and test fire it every so often, but I think a rarely used gun is a bad thing.

As I've read over all of this and myself being the original poster I never meant it to come across as no big deal. It did because of my choice of words and I was trying to come off as look what happened and how I dealt with it but trying to give a little levity as to insight conversation not judgement. It all happened so fast and was one of those awkward moments where you feel so uncomfortable you make a joke.... My daughter tells me I type with attitude all the time and I guess shes right. Shipyard and others you were right I shouldn't have posted it at all or the very least the way that I did. I have read every post and have taken them to heart. Shippy can I still call you Shippy????? LOL Yours I did more cuz I read it with the attitude you must be perfect how lucky for you!!! Truth is you hold yourself and others very accountable for our sport and our right to carry.
I have tweaked if you will my attitude towards carrying. I will keep in mind these posts so I don't just treat this powerful firearm as willy nilly as I do by grabbing my keys & moneyless clip. ;)
Thank you all for your insight and opinions

mzdadoc-

thanks a lot for your response and completing this story full circle - so often, it's easier for someone when criticized to puff out the chest, flame the boards and march off never to be heard from again. i am glad that this is not one of those instances. i will apologize wholeheartedly if i came accross as holier than thou or better than anyone - was not my intent as i now believe it wasn't your intent to come accross as negative in your original post either.

i'm glad that you can say a mistake was made and that you've taken advice to heart - it would be nice if more people could. i admit i'm not perfect and i try to be open to criticism myself - isn't always easy and the low road is a pretty easy slope to coast down. all in all, i'm glad no one was hurt, those involved are better people and our little "special friends club" as someone referred to this site as ( ) CAN actually keep a difficut discussion towards a beneficial end and not just sling mud on the walls of the nursury.andi'm not perfect either - i've done PLENTY of dumb **** alogn the road in my life and i'm glad i'm still standing... but those are perhaps stories for when we get off this public buss of a website and into a nice, cozy beer dispensary :D

and for me - your post DID make me think about how i carry and when - how i would alter depending on the situation. i currently do not have the responsibility to care for children or really enocunter them at any time during my day - but it's a really good exercize for me to think about what if i did have kids in the house or visited a fiends home where toddlers/teenagers are present - what would i different? how would i act? what would change about my daily habits? all really good things to consider to gain insight into my current practices to see if i'm overlooking something or possible doing something i shouldn't.

it's good to think outside your comfort zone and daily routine every once in a while. hope everyone else took a little something from this one as well.

and tell you what buddy, to show no hard feelings i'll throw out a standing offer - if we're ever in the same dive bar, i'll take care of the 2nd, 4th, and 6th through 9th rounds...
i do what i can, where i'm needed, and i ask so little in return. i'm a true humanitarian fueled by rainbows and whiskey. you should be so lucky to know me...
