Be more concerned with the cost of the accessories and the holsters to go with the pistol than the guns themselves.
Put together the price of a duty holster, ammo pouches and magazines. Outfit 29 officers or what have you with all that.
Then you should really do a cost analysis of the ammo they would use as well.
Just in plinking ammo:
45 ACP is 21.50 a box of 50.
9mm is 10.45 a box of 50.
You can supply the entire department there for half the cost alone if you just buy practice ammo if you went to 9mm.
So yeah, the bean counters may really be on to something.
Now cut cost even more by giving them a 9mm carbine in addition to a 9mm pistol that uses the same magazine as well? You would really be into a nice cost savings package as well as a system that would enable the officers to really have some nice firepower. Save the cost of an entirely different ammo, magazines and pouches.
And go look at the 9mm specs in a carbine and their capabilities BEFORE you start bashing the idea. Including their ability to defeat body armor past what a 45 ACP is capable of doing.
