Best / cheapest way to send a rifle back to mossberg ?

Postby BigJim on Thu Aug 16, 2012 3:05 pm

Mossberg asked me to send my model 817 .17hmr back for service,is there a certain way or just box it and UPS and any idea the costs as it seems it is on my dime ?

Any insight on how this works, don't I need a FFL to send a gun ?

Thanks for any insight,help.

Long Guns and hand guns have different rules. Shipping to a MFG. or FFL:
It is legal for private party to ship a long gun via USPS, their website will have some rules.
Big thing is Nothing on outside can say Firearm inside-
long guns DO NOT have to go overnight

As stated it's legal to use USPS, but I found it easier to use FED EX. (most post office employees I run across don't know the laws, and will spend 20 min looking up stuff or calling their supv for guidance.( never researched using UPS)
Just to keep it simple call the FEdEx office before, so they are up to speed.

Be prepared to show the gun is unloaded( don't seal package until they OK it.
I recall maybe $20 +/-

ETA:

Is the gun going in for warranty work?
Is so, you might be eligible to get a printable shipping label from them.

Thanks, did a search too but then I never use the right keywords it seems ?

I am guessing no on the warranty as they offered no prepaid label..got it used and it had some rust on the bolt, cleaned it off but there remains a shadow of the pattern, emailed pics to mossberg and the rep emailed back to return the shotgun...yes he wrote shotgun ,then gave me basic directions to return the entire gun to them in tx. and that if there is charges involved they will call first and don't really have any funds for this right now.... :(

It seems odd that just that part ( same finish as barrel / receiver ) would rust ?

depends of your definition of 'best'.

'best' way COULD be to drive to the headquarters, tie it to a brick and chuck it through a window* :bolt:

When I shipped my 9200 back for repairs last winter, I boxed it and shipped it via UPS - had go to the distribution center in Eagan. I know it was less than $20 to ship, but I don't recall the exact amount - I think it was around $13.
