I wish I had specialized at one point. I have a lot of guns, so if I had, I would probably have a pretty amazing collection of whatever it was. Now, it's a little of everything, from modern sporters to WWII/WWI to post-war military and on and on. It's impressive to people who think a vault-full of guns is impressive, but anyone who collects a certain type looks at the three or four I have in that genre and just says, "meh."

hell, i barely have the funds to walk into the museum, let alone take an artifact home! however, i'm a steel-framed pistol kinda guy. i like the 1911 chassis a lot, but i will have to say that what really makes my knees weak is a nice wheelgun. i have had the opportunity to shoot some really REALLY nice revolvers. probably the coolest one was a 4" Python that had been polished to a shimmer of blued steel and jeweled hammer/trigger in PURE GLORY! it was wearing some nice walnut stocks, sporting a beat-to-hell rear sight and orange paint on the front. the gent that owned the gun insisted a put a few downrange (twist my arm) in double action (that really is the only option, isn't it?) and i was blown away by the fluid motion of the trigger. it was smooth as glass, and broke clean at around 5-6 pounds. granted, that particular firearm was good for semiwadcutter 38's only, but that's not the point. the point (if there is one) is that it was a gun that a collector would have vomited at seeing. yeah, a Python that had been turned into a "custom?" back in the 80s. he said there was no way that he could have afforded it, however his wife was **** the gunsmith... he was the gunsmith

i like ARs a lot, probably too much, and i'm thinking of diving into the bolt-action world. i have a Mosin (don't we all?) and a Ruger M77 tang safety (another rifle thats rare like a hat in winter). my Mosin was a bubba bastard, and the Ruger is for deer. however, i want a NICE bolt-gun!!

if it weren't for those pesky kids (mine) i'd have a few more. i'd also have my damn motorcycle running, but that's another story for a different day

I'm a sucker for Sig's and 1911's. I don't have much of a collection of 1911's, but I have several Sig's in my collection. I have unfortunately also caught the AR bug and have started building them and that is an expensive habit.

I'd eventually like to build an "iconic" collection -- meaning example guns of the "iconic" firearms, made famous/infamous by Hollywood, the anti's, the military or popular culture:

Handguns:
.357mag revolver
.44mag revolver
.45LC revolver
.22 revolver
.22 semi-automatic (Ruger Mk Series)
.45 Colt 1911
9mm/.40 Glock

Rifles:
M1 Garand
1903A3 Springfield
K98 Mauser
Win94 .30-30
10/22
Bolt action .22
AR-15
AK-47 (or naughty naughty clone)
Winchester Model 70 (or other quintessential deer rifle)

Shotguns:
Rem 870
12ga side by side
Break action .410

I'm sure I'm missing something - thats OK, I have a LONG LONG LONG LONG LONG way to go towards completing this collection anyways!

I looked for you Friday am. It would be heaven/hell to work somewhere that you get to shoot nice guns.

I like those kinds of collections. I wonder if most people tend to generally shoot the same two or three?

Maybe I can send you a pic sometime. I don't know much about it, except that it's a .22 revolver and is very worn.
I've got a .22 rifle that was given to me by my dad when I turned 16. It looks like a Marlin, but it says Western Auto Model 150M on it.
Anyone remember Western Auto stores? Those guns mean a lot to me. They aren't worth a lot but the sentimental value is great.

Sam when I think of you, I think of .50's. That sounds like an interesting mix.

PM me with the model name or a description of the gun. I'll look at my resource materials, flimsy as they are, and give you what I can. The serial number (X out the last couple digits if you like) patent dates, and exact writing regarding the company name and model are the main points one can give without actually having the gun in hand or a picture available. Iver put out a ton of handguns and the 22s were either fairly popular or not at all depending on the model. Many of these were not meant to be used with modern high speed ammo and it is strongly recommended to use either standard velocity Long Rifle or to use Shorts or Longs in these guns. It wasn't until the 1950's that Iver Johnson pistols began to be "safe" for use with the high speed LR cartridges.

I have limited or specialized my interests. I like big bore handguns like of course the .45 acp, plus handguns in .454 Casull, .475 Linebaugh and a .358 Winchester with a few 10mm thrown in. As far as rifles I again prefer big bores such as the 45-70, .375 Win and .375 H&H, 35 Rem., .35 Whelen and the .458 SOCOM. Then there are the interesting ones like the 7-30 Waters, 6.8 SPC and .221 Fireball.

So that is limited and specialized, right? :?

In my experience Browning Hi Powers are like 1911's. You can't stop at one. There are old ones, military ones, new ones, blued ones, black ones, nickel ones.....
Browning Hi Powers have that nice feel in the hand like 1911's too. Very Very Addicting

Oh boy, you are not helping. I kid, I kid. The Brownings are cool as heck to me for precisely the reasons you mentioned as well as the fact that it's by Mr. Browning. He was a genius. I can't wait to own my first.

Thanks Smurfman. It may take me until the weekend but I would appreciate knowing more about it.
