I would be inclined to let someone several pay grades below me clear the house. Fortunately, you had all the doors locked and could see if there were any signs of forced entry. Did you check the perimeter of the dwelling to see if any windows were broken before entering?

It's a good thing the LEO's did'nt notice you sweeping your house. You could have been mistaken for the BG. BANG BANG. OOPS.

Semantics are everything. You "cleared" your house and "swept" the rooms, and you get jumped on by commenters. If you had "entered" your house with a "sense of heightened awareness and alertness", you would probably be congratulated.

Imagining a possible scenario, if it had not been a non-incident, would you rather be explaining to the police, how you shot some thug while "clearing the house" or "walking through the house." Language matters.

The difference is that in the middle of the night when you hear a thud, YOU ARE ALREADY IN THE HOUSE.
What difference does that make? There was no sign of forced entry. If everyone called the cops "just as a precautionary measure" before entering their homes every night, It would create problems.

And as another poster commented, symantics is everything.

You MOUT train on your place everynight? Sweet.

My point was that if I really felt the need to go on the offensive and I had the time, I would call the cops before I kicked my doors down; or at least a friend with a shotgun and ram.

Exactly. I think this also enters into the discussion on Joe Horn. In his case, it seems that the adrenaline may have been in control of a good share of what came out of his mouth.

It may not be everyone, but a heck of a lot of people do just that.
