Woah, hammAR is back??

My dad and I were talking about OGC on the way to deer hunting today. He wants to join but doesn't want the mandatory NRA membership. I also summed up some of the issues posted in this thread which made him nervous. But he still wants to join IF he doesn't have to get the membership.

Is this possible? Or does the NRA provide a kickback to someone to make it a requirement to join? Or is there some other reason?

I think there is NRA support/ funding available to ranges with 100% NRA membership.
I am pretty sure NRA membership is a prerequisite.
Also, there is about a 2 yr waiting list at Oakdale.
And even with all that is going on, it is still a good place to shoot.

I go as much as I can during the deer rifle sight in times. Great place to shoot and I am on the waiting list for membership.

Sorry to hear about the IT problems. Will it fast track my membership if I have no clue what anyone is talking about?

Well, that simplifies things.

The NRA membership is compulsory, due to the fact it's an NRA sponsored club, I have huge issues with the NRA that I won't get into, so I chose to counter-donate an equal or greater amount of money to offset the NRA's $25 per year.

The 2-year waiting list probably isn't accurate anymore, I was on the list for 4 months before I got called up. With that huge increase in membership, there is going to be even greater turn over come next year. My recommendation is to get on the list and to make the decision when and if you get invited to join.

The membership rejected a proposal last year to allow membership in alternative national gun rights organizations (Second Amendment Foundation and one other I can't recall...) or the NRA. Basically 'choose one of these three' rather than 'NRA or no membership'.

We tried. Hopefully in a few years as the membership becomes younger - or more accurately, as more younger members get off their butts and show up at the Annual Meeting - we'll be able to try again with some more success...

..........and if we want a website to automate things like range duty, etc... then you have to pay some costs to someone who knows how to actually do that stuff.

Trust me here, I'm no fan of how some things have been run - but some things do cost a reasonable amount of money to get them to work the right way.

This was all set up and done - through a secured VM service including automated scheduling, etc.....however, it was all undone with the current regime on the advice of a propeller-headed, game playing, wannabe techie......with a $5/mo fer hosting ... Google calendar, free kind of attitude.......why do you think that several (IT professionals) resigned including an extremely qualified and certified IT Security director....

I think I might know NRA affiliated clubs who do not require members to be NRA members, but I'm not 100% sure on that. I do however believe it is entirely financial. Gun clubs can become NRA recruiters and so they do get a kickback when someone signs up through them. If they make every member of the club join the NRA, $10 a head adds up.

I also am an NRA recruiter. GunClasses.Net can sign people up through a link that also gives us back a little commission; it gives people signing up $10 off the membership, so it's $25 instead of $35. I'm an NRA instructor, and I don't require my students to join, whether they take an NRA class from me or a non NRA class... I think the clubs can decide whether to make people join or not, and it's probably simply a financial decision.

You can renew or gift a membership from there, as well. (holidays... gift... just an idea...)
