M&P Shield question

Postby Gronkzilla on Wed Dec 19, 2012 3:28 pm

Ok, so I know shields are still in very short supply at retail, so my question is more whether folks are selling them in the private market? Does putting a WTB post make sense at this point, or will it just get laughed at?

But to be constructive; if the Shield is unavailable, what is being recommended in it's place? I've investigated/shot the Walther PPS, and consider it a very close runner up.

What are MNGT's thoughts on it?

(I suddenly realize that this maybe should go under the handgun section; if a mod would like to move it, please do.)

I recently Sold my Shield and bought my dad's (his has XS big dot sights) It sold quickly and at exactly what I had into it incl tax. I've now seen them going for up to $550 whch is $130 over what they came out for. I like mine a lot. Far superior to the Kel Tec PF-9. I like the PPS as well except for the mag release. I hear they're releasing a version with the more common mag release button but have no idea when ...

Have you looked at the Kahr lineup?

Thunderjohn, member here, had two for $449 at the last gun show. I'm sure they're gone....I'm sure you could scare up a group order from this board for four or five of them and give it him.

Put a WTB, what harm can it do? In the meantime just keep looking, my boss put his name on 'the list' at Gander and got one in 2 weeks - it's not that big of a deal really.

Great gun... but being a lefty and fond of the XD platform, I traded mine for an XD-S.

if you're looking for a single stack 9 thats pretty darned close to the shield look at the bersa bp9cc. a heck of a lot better put together than the pf9. other than my officer sized 1911, it's the sidearm i carry the most.

A WTB can't hurt although the market for the Shields is something like the current AR market, everyone wants one but few have them to sell. Unless you want to get on lists and wait it out you'll most likely have to spend over MSRP to make it happen right away.

I understood that he got two in, but they were both spoken for before they arrived. I think he told me he has to order 8 at a time, but don't quote me on that. Not sure whether he'd get 8 even if he placed such a prepaid-for order.

Best place if you're in a hurry to buy is gunbroker. Get one with a later serial number on it as the early ones created reports about magazines dropping (especially in the 40).

Good luck.

Yeah, i'm not really in a super hurry, and i definitely would rather pay the retail price or less for a used one.

Concerning the PPS, i'm pretty sure i could get used to the odd mag release; plus the adjustable backstraps is pretty handy. However, i'm not a huge fan of inline trigger safeties (pps, glock, xd, etc), and having a manual safety on the Shield appeals to me as well.

Thanks for the help guys!

My roommate just got done calling all of the shops that sell S&W starting in St. Cloud. He finally found one, in International Falls. From all the shops I have talked to, S&W is erratic in their shipments. They will randomly get a box with 4 9mm and 4 40cal. Your best bet it just call all the shops that you would actually drive to that are listed on S&W site and get on their waiting lists. Most lists still have 30+ people, but with the number of people out there looking for these, I am sure a lot of them are dupes. You will also find shops that do not do lists. Call them every day and be prepared with a CC to put some money down over the phone. The factories are cranking a few thousand out every week, so it is only a matter of time till you snag one.

Used you can find +$50 to +$100 over retail on the 40's, and you are going to be +$150 at least on the 9mm.

Good luck!

M&P Shield question

From the "For What-It's Worth file..."

I just cannot believe anyone would sell their Shield...I've got the .40 and aside from being a near perfect carry gun, the thing is a flippin' tac-driver. Just sayin'

I totally agree. For all the carry guns I've tried. This one is just better for me in basically every department.

Any one have the Crimson Trace LaserGuard for the Shield...have them on my .380 & PF-9 and consider it essential for primary carry gun.

I understand that before release S&W worked carefully w/ holster makers & others so accessories would be available right away.
