air guns

Saw a show about air guns. I had no idea people hunt deer etc with them. Didn't know they were that powerful.

Are they under the same regulations as standard firearms?

No. Or rather, not usually.

Which is one of the main reasons people living under tyranny buy them.

There are a few manufacturers for the South Korean market who have externally charged air guns that will push a 230 grain .44 caliber bullet to 830 fps.

Just about exactly what an M1911 manages.

(They charge from a scuba tank, and IIRC are good for maybe five shots between charges.)

Not in the U.S.
Britain and Europe have serious restrictions on muzzle energy. Many of the more powerful British and German air rifles imported into the US would not be allowed in the countries of their origin.
Back in the day of Napoleon's armies, snipers used air rifles, as they were more accurate than firearms.

Actually, according to the letter of the law, any air gun of greater than .18 caliber is a firearm. Including paintball guns and airsoft. (And including spring guns, which would not only include the cheapest airsoft crap, but even nerf guns.)

There seems to be some unwritten agreement between the police, the prosecutors, and the courts, to show more common sense than the legislature did, when they wrote the statute.

Minn. Stat. 624.7181 RIFLES AND SHOTGUNS IN PUBLIC PLACES.
Subdivision 1.Definitions.

(a) "BB gun" means a device that fires or ejects a shot measuring .18 of an inch or less in diameter.

It's true there are many local and state laws regarding the use/ discharge of air guns, there is no regulation that I am aware of regarding the sale, transfer, or possession

You can still get full auto electric BB guns and paintball guns. For the BB check Pyramid Air

Air rifles were carried by the Lewis & Clark expidition.
(Maybe only one rifle - can't remember.)
Info on it suggested it was made from cast iron and was good for many shots before recharging.
Was used to take game animals without scaring them.

Pump and Reservoir

Image

This 22-shot repeating air rifle is an original Girardoni military pattern rifle of the type used on the Lewis & Clark Expedition. It is a butt reservoir piece with a bore size of .462 caliber. Similar pieces were supplied by Bartolomeo Girardoni to the Austrian army circa 1780. As originally issued, each Girardoni air rifle had three detachable air reservoirs, each requiring about 1,500 strokes of a pump to completely pressurize the reservoir. Once filled to operating pressure (about 800 psi) the air rifle could fire up to 70 shots before the reservoir required replacing. A metal tube on the side of the barrel held up to 22 lead balls that could be fed one at a time to the firing chamber by a simple sideways push of a plunger. At a distance of 50 feet, this rifle is capable of placing ten shots into a group the size of a quarter.

Air guns are definately hunt worthy. A great many rabbits and squirrels were dispatched at the hands of myself and brother with Daisy 880's (which are tame compared to what are posted above) using pellets when we were knee high to a grass hopper. Great fun. Top it with a 4x15 and small critters dont stand a chance.

The local tree rat population certainly wishes I didn't have mine.

I'd love to get into one of the big bores, but they cost more than my real guns.
