My first visit to Frontiersman

Postby XDM45 on Sat Jan 19, 2013 4:31 pm

So I went to Frontiersman for the first time ever today and picked up 4 of those nice little 100 round green hard-plastic case boxes for .45ACP ammo for under $4.00 a pop, those things are a rare find. I looked at Gunstop (B.C. = before Closing) and they didn't have any. In fact, it's the first time I've seen them anywhere, so I picked up a few.

Like everyone else, they don't have an XDs (my next purchase) or a Ruger 10/22 (my purchase after that), which I figured would probably be the case...and like everywhere else, they are out of ammo. No defensive JHP .45ACP and maybe 2 boxes of .45ACP in the back room for target ammo, if that.

Now what strikes me is odd is that three times I was asked for help by other customers who figured I must work there because I open carry. I replied "Nope, I don't work here. I always open carry and I'm just another customer browsing like you are, but I'll help if I can." (which I did.) Is it an unwritten rule that only gun store employees open carry and that if you are in a gun store with an open carry, you must work there? It was funny, not upsetting, just.....odd to me.

So after that, I'm on the way home and some guy is flashing his lights at me road raging because I'm not doing 60mph in a 30mph zone. When we get to a stoplight, I'm behind a van which due to the battery being almost dead, I could barely see his 4-way flashers going off and there's no one in the vehicle.... Now the guy that flashed his lights at me for whatever raging reason honks at me from behind, pulls out and drives by looking at me like I've done something wrong to him. Freakin' whack jobs out there road raging today. (I saw the usual MN driving, but worse today as well....)

Maybe he was pissed he couldn't find any ammo.... for the public's sake, let's hope he wasn't shopping where I was or owns any firearms, because they guy seems pretty unstable. He's probably piss himself if he knew I was carrying. hahahaha I just ignored the antics and let it all go.... but if did make me think.... I wonder how many ragers out there are acting crazy towards someone driving around them who is armed?

That must be contagious. I had a couple of maggot infested tree hugging types in an old Volvo laden with left leaning bumper stickers (including a prized Wellstone one) give me crap today. I stopped at a light and gave a panhandler some $$. These idiots caught up with me at the next light and made obscene gestures at me.

The answer should be irrelevant, because permit holders are all masters of de-escalation. .... Right?

I don't even have a permit and ragers don't bother me. I watched one today, an early 2000s burban who's driver was playing "gun it and slam on the brakes by the trunk". He did this like 15 times to some poor older guy. I gave him the option to take my lane, he didn't want it. I smile inside and think about the gas money they are wasting.

You mean, after all the fuss about carrying a full size XDM openly you're finally going to get a little carry gun? :bravo:

No, I won't only carry concealed. I prefer carrying a full sized XDM openly. I was born with my natural gun hanging out like the good lord intended, so that's how I'll carry my purchased EDC pistol. The XDs is a backup.

Let people look. They probably figure I don't give a f---- (and I don't) if they see open carry. Honestly, I've only had two people comment on it, most people never even notice. (Some notice and don't say anything.) Either way, it's all good.

Back in the stone ages when I took drivers ed, we were taught a couple things about flashing your lights or having them flashed at you-

1) It is a polite way of signally the driver in front of you that you would like to pass and requesting that they move over (to the right) to allow this.
2) When somebody flashes you, the polite thing to do was move over (to the right) and let them pass.

This seemed to work well for about 20 years. I think they must have stopped teaching these simple rules/guidelines and that the self absorbed, disconnected, narcissistic facebook/twitter, texting and chatting while I drive slowly in the left lane generation views any suggestion that they move over as a personal affront. That doesn't cover the pious passive-aggressive idiots in the left lane who love to go 1mph under the limit and let 30 cars stack up behind the to prove some point. And we can;t leave out the hot heads on both sides prove that you can be a penis-head at any age.

So, when somebody flashes you, they're probably asking politely for you to move over so they can pass. Is it REALLY any skin off your butt to do it? Just saying- it keeps traffic flowing...........

There are only three types of drivers:
  1. Aggressive, uptight ******** who drive way too fast, and
  2. Neurotic, hypercautious ******** who drive way too slow, and
  3. Me.

People in their younger years to street race on the freeway, I may or may not have done so in the past like to either flash their emergency lights, or flash the shocker as an F U you suck type of deal

I will flash headlights at you for two reasons:
1. Quit driving so slow in the Left Lane, move over to Right Lane.
2. You have NO taillights or brake lights, you are a danger to other drivers.

The double-tap flash from behind is has it's origins in Europe, where it is legally recognized as a request to pass. At least when I lived there(late 60s), no speed limits existed in the left lane. One was/ is? required by law to move to the right to allow the passing of a faster vehicle. It was the obligation of any vehicle in the left lane not to hinder the speed of another vehicle approaching from behind in the left lane.
(as an aside- the momentary flash lever was often connected to a high power air horn on many high-performance cars[not likely legal use of horn in most of US])
This technology/ practice migrated to the US with the importation of 'better-than-VW' Euro-cars.

I suspect most drivers today don't remember the 'high-beam' switches located on the dead-pedal.

Probably the over arching reason that system has broken down in this country, at least my observation- stems from congestion, and ignorance/ lack of consideration on the part of the driver trying to pass, and the self appointed road cops. The practice doesn't/ can't work when someone will start flashing in multi-lane, congested traffic, expecting someone at near speed-limit to drop their speed 10-20 mph in an attempt to move to an equally congested lane to the right. The only thing moving over will accomplish is get the impatient driver up the backside of the next forward car which is proceeding as fast as possible.

Then you get the extremes:
The guy in a hurry that is 15-20mph over the speed limit, and the road cop who is going the speed limit minus 10.
Ignorant and distracted drivers, and road congestion has made driving on most expressways much more of a chore than it ever should be.

I stay below 10 over (max 70)... Dimmler ammendment covers up to that.

I know the foot mounted flashers... its funny when my friends are in my car and wondering what the pedal is.
