I will be there Tuesday evening at 6pm.

Jim Newberger is burning the Midnight Oil. I just received this from him:

Hi BlkVooDoo,

Thanks for the email. I want you
to know that I support our 2nd Amendment
rights and will stand in defense of them.
I am also endorsed by the NRA and I
am also a firearms owner. I do not support
any further restrictions to firearms.
Supporters who are interested in attending the
hearings are meeting in Tues Feb 5th in room 400S of the
State Office Building from 8:30a to 9:30a.
The State Office building is located at 100 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther
King Jr Blvd, St. Paul MN, 55155
They will then go to Room 10 for the hearing.
thanks again!
God's peace,
Jim

All adds up to a liberal legislature and a liberal governor.

I get that, but the "F" in "DFL" is farm. I have to believe there must be lots of rural DFLers that would not support gun control- Tim Walz being one of them. Then again, it is much harder to be wrong with such a fine name :D .
Similarly, I wouldn't count on Dayton to support gun control either. He has never been particularly anti-gun, and has to know that signing significant gun control would seriously hurt his reelection chances. Here is a quote from him:

"I took an oath of office not to uphold the country but to uphold the constitution of the United States as both as a Senator and then as Governor. And my understanding and my reading of the governor (Constitution I am guessing?) is that it provides a complete permission for any law abiding citizen to possess firearms whichever ones that he or she chooses and the ammunition to go with that."

I am not using this as an excuse for inaction. I have been vocal with my reps, state and federal. Don't forget to be vocal with your friends too. Not all pro gunners spend all day on MNGT. I have some very pro gun friends who didn't know about Feb. 8 or the MN legislation. I sent texts to all my pro gun friends, several of whom would not have taken action otherwise.

Here's my letter. And I'll be attending the hearing too.

I do not support any legislation that limits or otherwise infringes on the rights of responsible, law-abiding gun owners. So called "assault weapons" and standard capacity magazines are not the problem and Minnesota's own gun crime statistics are clear proof of this.

I urge you to take notice of the record firearms sales that are going on right now across the country and in our great state. Firearm manufacturers and retailers have been utterly unable to keep up with the demand. Who are the people buying all these firearms? We are your constituents and we vote.

Firearm ownership is bi-partisan and a cherished right. This is evident in the 1994 assault weapons ban that largely cost the Democrats the US Congress for over a decade.

We elected you, please represent us accordingly or be prepared to be replaced.

Zero chance of it passing. Rounding up.

Many legislators in the MN house and senate grabbed a seat from a GOP leaning district. And they probably want to keep their jobs in 2014.

So I can write, and will.

But assist a political noob.

What is a hearing like and what is the value of me attending? Do they have public input at times? How does one show support or opposition by attending?

I assume each committee chairperson runs theirs differently but what can one expect?

Thanks!

Reply from my MN state reps:

Minnesota Representative Joe Radinovich DFL ( informal communication):

Dear xxxxxx,

I don't expect that you'll find any problem with my position on firearms.

I am opposed to the "big three" right now--the weapons ban, magazine regulations, and expanding background checks.

There is one proposal supported by the NRA intended to cut down on "straw purchasing" that I may support if it comes to the House floor. I don't serve on any of the committee that will initially hear legislation.

I can send a formal response to your residence as well, if you prefer.

Take care,

Joe

Minnesota Senator Carrie Ruud Republican:

Dearxxxxx:

I want to assure you I remain committed to our second amendment rights. As a sworn protector of our constitution, I am concerned about the increasing encroachment on our second amendment rights. I believe the second amendment is one of the most important rights in our country and guarantees our personal freedom. If any anti-2nd Amendment legislation advances you can count on me to voice my opposition.

I hope you're right. I'll be interested to see the impact of Obama's visit. I'm sure he senses blood in the water (right or wrong). Democrat governor, Democrat House, Democrat Senate. If he can't pull it off here, he loses political capital and has a problem with the whole agenda. IMHO, Obama has a lot at stake.

That's why he put the onus on the Legislature to get it done. He knows it'll never even come up to a vote in the Senate, let alone the House. And local races aren't his concern, so he's just pandering to a small portion of his base that wants to see some action.

I agree... Little chance of traction in the US Congress. I do worry about the Minnesota legislature. His total lack of leadership capability is likely to be less important at the state level, but his star power charisma could sway a more susceptible state legislature.

My state rep and senator are solid Pro 2A, but they get my correspondence anyway. I also send emails to each of the piblic safety committee members regarding this bill.

The politicians are motivated to stay in power through re-election, so they do notice the number of pro/con emails, letters, and calls, even if they don't agree with the message.

Keep the pressure on and let's all work together to jettison this worthless bill.

My letter to my representative -

Dear Representative ,

I am writing you today on a matter of great importance to me. As a voter, law abiding citizen, and concerned member of society. Violence by firearms in this country is a grave concern of mine, which is why I personally own several firearms. I have made the choice for myself and family to be prepared and protected. I do not rely on the police to defend me when a criminal is breaking my door down.

It appears that there are members of the state government who feel that limiting the capacity of firearm magazines, and making “scary” looking weapons illegal for purchase are the solution to violent crimes committed with firearms.

I subscribe to the belief that gun-free zones are the reason for the violence. The less armed law abiding citizens that you have, the more appeal for criminals. Who will be there to defend themself or stop them?

https://www.revisor.mn.gov/bin/bldbill. ... ssion=ls88

I urge you to defend the freedom of all Minnesotans, and represent me, your constituent by voting against proposed bill HR 241.

My personal opinion is that we should focus our efforts on enforcing current standing laws, not creating new laws. We should never infringe on the rights that we have as free law abiding citizens.

I have the right to defend myself, no matter what legal weapon that I choose. Be it an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle with a 30 round magazine, a Glock 17 with 17 round magazine, or a 6 shot revolver.

Thank you for your time. I hope that you make the choice to vote against this bill if it comes before you.

Rep. Mike Beard's assistant called me today and said Rep. Beard supports 2A rights and is against HF 241 242 243 and the others I mentioned in my voice and emails to him.
