Engraving

Postby unit44justin on Mon Feb 11, 2013 10:29 pm

Hey folks, I am sending my Sig p6 in to have it refinished. The frame has some nasty looking engraving on it that I would like to get rid of. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions on how to get rid of it. It is not very deep, but looks like someone did it by hand with a dremel engraving tool.

Mine has the same but does not look that bad. Looks like someone tried to enlarge it or something.

Is that white fill or a reflection. Why would one want to fill that in.

I also would be interested in seeing when you finish as I may want to do the same for the SO.

Draw file to keep surface flat. Follow by sandpaper to about a 400g finish.

Bead blast frame.

You may not want to remove the markings though, as these are the importer markings.

The Gun Control Act (GCA) of 1968 states: “It shall be unlawful for any person knowingly to transport, ship, or receive, in interstate or foreign commerce, any firearm which has had the importer’s or manufacturer’s serial number, removed, obliterated, or altered or to possess or receive any firearm which has had the importer’s or manufacturer’s serial number removed, obliterated, or altered and has, at any time, been shipped or transported in interstate or foreign commerce.” [18 U.S.C. 922(k)].

That only refers to the actual SN.

You may want to inquire with the ATF technical branch for a clarification.

That is the way it came. It is metal showing not white fill. I'll probably end up leaving it to not potentially violate any federal regulations. Hopefully it will fill in with the cerakote and not look as bad.

Go over it with a flat black marker

There's letters out there stating that only the SN must remain. The rest of the markings aren't required to remain if the weapon is refinished. I removed the importers markings on the Saiga, but left all the Izhmash marks that belong.

Import name doesn't need to remain unless the importer also added a new serial number (often the case with guns that have Cyrillic or Arabic numbers). A Sig isn't a problem

Arabic numerals? Wait? Don't we already use those?
